Hello Legerdemain

Death is looming large in my family right now. MIL is in very bad health and is likely going to enter hospice in the next couple of days. This current reality of my life drew me in to read your take on death.

I have seen those roadside shrines. They exist all over the world. It is true that these things can take on a life of their own when there is so much stuff on the side of the road that it becomes a public health issue. Over time, these shrines become smaller. Maybe there is a ribbon that is regularly exchanged on a pole. It does make me think of that person, usually a young person, who died at this place in an accident. I wouldn't know of them at all without that shrine. On the other hand, I didn't know them before either.

Your piece is well written with lots of visuals. I could see the whole thing play out in front of my inner eye. From the bad decision to leave a young boy behind. From the bad decision to run into traffic. From the helpless public's reaction to instantly pour all of their mourning into a public display.

As mourning is for the living, I find it hard to prescribe how others should mourn me. I do understand your position on the matter of a shrine at an accident location. Make sure your loved ones know this about you. Hopefully, you and your loved ones will never be in the position to have to make that choice, but it's good to have these conversations.
