Overall Impression:

Oh, what a lovely poem! It brought a smile to my lips. I recently moved to Scotland and am thoroughly enjoying all the birds in my garden. One of my first purchases for the new house was a bird feeder. So, I just had to stop by this poem about the winter king!

We don't get cardinals here. I had to look them up and they're quite fierce looking birds! I can see why they are called the king of winter. If I were another bird, I wouldn't mess with one. *Laugh* I love the imagery in this poem. The crimson helm, and the song of oak and elm. You paint a vivid picture. It's a beautiful way to bring the reader into the cardinal's world.

You taught me another new form here - the Retourne. I am usually not that fond of repeated lines, but you did so in a way that was effective. I also thank you for your use of punctuation, and how you allow the capitalisation at the beginning of each line to depend upon the individual sentences within the piece. That really assists the reading experience. Excellent work!

I do not have any suggestions. This is a beautiful poem, that is clearly written with great skill. I wouldn't change a thing about it.
