Creatures of the night are staples of the horror genre. Vampires arise at sundown to feed on the blood of unsuspecting victims. Werewolves are transformed into beasts with the rising of the full moon. While zombies and ghosts are not limited to appearing at any time of day, they are much more frightening at night.

Human creatures of the night are often more terrifying than any legendary horror monster. Jack the Ripper roamed the dark streets of the Whitechapel district of London from 1888-1891. He was believed to be responsible for the deaths of at least five women and was never caught.

Nocturnal animals such as cats, owls, and bats have adaptations such as good night vision, excellent hearing, and ability to move quietly which allow them to hunt at night. If the monster in your horror story is a night creature, you might want to give it some of the abilities and characteristics of nocturnal predators.

Creatures of the night are especially frightening to day walkers like humans because they are active when we need to sleep. Fear of a night walking demon will keep people awake at night, increasing their vulnerability.

In many legends, night creatures are vulnerable by day. A vampire must sleep from sunup to sundown and can be destroyed by sunlight. A werewolf is usually a normal human when it is not under the influence of the full moon. Trolls are turned to stone by the sun's rays.

Legends of evil night creatures might have developed and persisted because they kept people safe from real dangers of the night. While vampires and werewolves might not be real, nocturnal human predators like Jack the Ripper are all too real.

Something to try: Write a story from the perspective of a night creature who needs to find ways to survive during the day.
