About This Newsletter

When I was new, I wondered why my writing got very little attention. After a while on the site, I found out why. This newsletter mentions some of those reasons and a few other reasons why people might not read someones writing. I also include suggestions on getting your writing noticed by fellow members.

Letter from the editor

Most writers who post their writing on WdC do so in hopes of others reading their work. Though, when it sits in our profile with no views or reviews it can be disheartening. Or worse, we get a lot of views, yet no comments. When I was new and I saw a lot of views, yet no review and/or rating, I just assumed they didn't like my writing and skimmed past it, That may have been true in some cases, but not necessarily.

As I started reading more writing on here, I began to realize some things I was doing wrong. For one, sometimes I didn't utilize the title and description areas to grab the readers attention. Just as us as readers pass up books because of a lame title or cover, readers might pass up your writing for the same reason.

To make your item stand out, try to create a catchy title, then use the description area as a tool to lure your reader into your writing. So if you've written a poem, rather than putting a description like "just a poem I wrote" or something similar to that, add a witty verse from your poem into the description or a sentence summarizing the topic. Even if you are unsure about a title, at least pick a temporary title, instead of "untitled". You can always change the title when something better comes to mind. Then, add an image to your item to make it pop out to the reader when they are skimming through stories or poems.

Below are some reasons people may skim past writing without reading it:

*The endless paragraph- When a whole story is shoved into one or a few paragraphs it is hard to read. Not only is it considered poor paragraph structure, but it is hard to read. The reader gets lost, constantly trying to find their place again, which distracts from the story.

*Constant grammar issues- If the writing starts off with a ton of sentence structure and grammar issues, the reader might assume all the writing on the page is of the same quality and stop reading.

Have great ideas, but you are not good at grammar? There are plenty of editors out there you can utilize. Microsoft Word and LibreOffice have built in editing software. You can find plenty of others by doing an internet search. Of course, before downloading them to your computer, make sure to read the reviews and get input from other writers who have used the program.

Now that you have cleaned up your writing and added some bling to get the readers attention, advertise your writing.

* Post your item in the newsfeed
* Post your item in "Please Review and/or "The Shameless "Plug" Page

The most effective way of getting your writing repeatedly noticed on WdC is by being active. Review, submit your writing to member created contests, and converse with others on the newsfeed, You may even meet some great friends.

More importantly, no matter how imperfect your writing may be, never stop writing. Only through practice can we improve. Even if you are already a prolific writer, there is always room for improv
