Letter from the editor

Dear Reader,

Yup, The question people are asking each other is, "How do you stay upbeat?" In these times of uncertainty, staying upbeat may be difficult.

Well, one of the techniques I use is - Snail Mail. Writing physical letters to people. Only the local post works here these days, so I've been sending letters to friends within my city.

In these letters, I do one of two things:
a. write what I remember of what we've shared as friends.
b. write my childhood / college memories.

I find that doing this -- taking a pen and actually writing these down -- is very soothing. Imagining the person's reaction when she / he receives the letter brings a smile to my face. And when they receive the letter and respond -- either by Snail Mail or email/chat, it feels really warm and fuzzy.

Here's what a letter might sound like:

Dear Shaila,

How're you doing, and how's the family? All well, I hope. All well here with Dad and self! I made a beetroot-carrot roll for lunch, and it was quite edible, Dad said it was pretty good!

Hey, do you remember the time we locked our prof. out of class? We were in our first year of junior college and didn't feel like having class one day, so we locked the door. He came and said 'It's no use keeping quiet, I know you're in there because the door is locked from the inside.' We told him we weren't in the mood for a lecture, and he said he had a job to do to give us one. You remember how he climbed the pipe and entered through the window? Gosh, Mr. B. was a sport. He just took class as usual, as if nothing unusual had happened at all.

And guess what? After I wrote up this incident, I got the sudden inspiration to contact him -- so I looked him up on Face Book, found him, and messaged him! He didn't quite remember me exactly, or the incident (it has been thirty five years, after all), but said it sounded just like him to do a thing like that. He supposed the class had been on one of the lower floors (I told him it was the first floor) as there was no way he could've climbed the pipe to the fifth storey of the college building! He also mentioned some other crazy things he's done in the intervening time! He's still teaching, apparently, even after all these years.

Picturing that youthful prank, in my mind's eye, and putting it down on paper, proved therapeutic. With another friend, I recalled, in more detail, some of the shopping expeditions or restaurant visits we've shared recently, up until lock-down.

If you like, you can give this a shot. Write mail to your close friends and family members, recalling the fun times you've shared. You need not even post them, if you're not incllined to, simply write them down for yourself. I find this has helped me, it may work for you.
