Make the Most Out of it

There was a time when I was in nursing school. I even graduated and I was a nurse for a couple of years. It wasn't for me. But that's not the story I want to tell.

In one of the classes, we had to sit in table groups of 4-5 students and work together. One day, the teacher told the class that each table had to choose the one person who would be the most likely to survive on a deserted island. The other students in the group unanimously chose me. I said that wouldn't be true. If I found myself stranded somewhere, I'd go sit at the foot of palm tree and cry. My fellow nursing students agreed. Yes, I would do that. For an hour maybe. But then I would get up and figure out how to build a hut with the materials on the island.

This year has shown me that they were at least partially right. When shelter in place started, I fell a little bit into a hole, emotionally speaking. To be honest, I'm still not OK with that dang coronavirus. I live in California in a suburb of Los Angeles and we are getting hammered with daily positive cases and worse. But I also know: It's not over until it's over.

With that in mind, no matter how this Covid-19 thing has affected you this year, get up, walk it off, and keep writing and Make the Most Out of it. Because we are writers here on this site. I don't know if it's because some of us have more time right now or always, but there are many contests going on right now. As you very well know, contests are only fun when people take the time to compete in them.

I've listed some contests and fun stuff in the Editor's Picks below, but be sure to check out "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com and "Activities @ Writing.Com for more. And, even more important: if you are hosting a contest or activity, be sure to post them to these pages. Posting something to your newsfeed is nice, but you won't be reaching the same potential audience because people have to see your newsfeed to know what you're up to. Anyone can go to the official contest & activity pages and find all the things that are going on right now.

If you post a contest or activity to one of those pages between August 12 - August 31 and you let me know in the comment section or in an email, I will make this trinket available to you. Your contest or activity has to be linked to one of these two official Writing.Com pages:
