Letter from the editor

I love reading horror and scary stories! I remember a conversation I had with Angus and I expressed to him that as much as I enjoy reading the genre, I struggle with writing it. He advised me to pick a common fear that people have, and then to expand on it by thinking of all the things that could go wrong. I thought that was pretty good advice, so this week we are going to look at some common phobias and prompt ideas.

*Skull* Arachnophobia
Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders and other arachnids. The sight of a spider can trigger a fear response, but in some cases, simply an image of an arachnid or the thought of a spider can lead to feelings of overwhelming fear and panic.

Prompt: In an effort to kill all the spiders, natural selection makes the survivors stronger, meaner, and sneakier. What could go wrong with that, lol?

*Skull* Acrophobia
Acrophobia, or the fear of heights, can lead to anxiety attacks and avoidance of high places. People who suffer from this phobia may go to great lengths to avoid high places such as bridges, towers, or tall buildings.

Prompt: You open your eyes from sleep to find that you are sitting on a narrow ledge high above the ground. How did you get there? How will you get down?

*Skull*Trypanophobia
Trypanophobia is the fear of injections, a condition that can sometimes cause people to avoid medical treatments and doctors. Like many phobias, this fear often goes untreated because people avoid the triggering object and situation.

Prompt: Despite the fear, a person receives a life-saving injection only to experience shocking/scary side effects.

*Skull*Exposure Therapy
Exposure therapy is a psychological treatment that was developed to help people confront their fears. When people are fearful of something, they tend to avoid the feared objects, activities, or situations. In such situations, a psychologist might recommend a program of exposure therapy in order to help break the pattern of avoidance and fear. In this form of therapy, psychologists create a safe environment in which to “expose” individuals to the things they fear and avoid. Exposure to the feared objects, activities, or situations in a safe environment helps reduce fear and decrease avoidance.

Prompt: A person has chosen the ‘wrong’ psychologist for treatment, finding him/herself with someone that has evil intentions and enjoys torturing their patients.
