As I write this newsletter, my aunt, niece and nephews are saying farewell to their husband and father. He has been in the hospital for… I think it is about a month now. It all went very fast. He felt a little under the weather and took a Covid test, and a few days later he was in an induced coma in the ICU. Over the past few weeks he has been in and out of the coma. Sadly, his condition worsened and worsened. There is nothing more that can be done. So, it is time to say goodbye, as difficult as it is.
I have lost several loved ones these past two years. I know that I am far from the only one. I am also no doubt far from the only one who, because of the circumstances we find ourselves in, has spent more time than normal thinking about death, and what comes after.
Throughout time, and across different nations and cultures, there have lived all manner of ideas of what happens to us after death. Some people believe that we are born again, over and over, until we have learned everything that we need to learn. Some believe that there is a heaven – a beautiful place where there is no death and no suffering. Amongst those who believe in a heaven there are those who also believe that there is a hell, where people who have done bad things are made to pay for their misdeeds. Yet others believe that there is no afterlife. That when we die, that’s it – there is no part of us that lives on in any way.
Then there are the differences in how people view rebirth, and heaven, and hell. For example, there is some disagreement on whether or not other species can make it into heaven. Do cats have souls? Do dogs? Whales? Fleas? Opinions can differ about the various species we share the world with. Personally, if I am to meet again all those who I have loved and lost I sure hope that amongst them are all my furry, feathery and scaly companions. They have been a part of my family. Our time together on Earth was far too short – we need to be together for eternity.
If you believe in an afterlife, what do you think it will be like? I reckon we all have our own unique mental picture of it, whether it’s a great nothing, an endless feast for fallen warriors, cherubs flying from cloud to cloud or something like my own idea of a realm in which all of us exist in harmony with nature and animals. It is possible that the afterlife is a unique experience for us all. That it is shaped by what we love and what we need and what we want to learn and explore. If that is the case, mine will include an enormous library and endless opportunities to study everything I want to know more about – and that’s a lot! Imagine the knowledge that is out there…
Some people feel concerned that eternity is, well, eternity. It is a difficult concept to wrap our heads around. Not many people live past 100. Imagine living for a thousand years, a hundred thousand, a million, a billion… and that would only be the beginning. It would be different, that’s for sure. It is something that we’d have to adapt to.
As difficult as eternity may be to comprehend, I find it even more difficult (and frightening) to contemplate nothingness. The end of my existence. Some people find comfort in that idea. They point out that there isn’t anything to worry about, because we wouldn’t be there to experience anything. That may be true, but I cannot fathom the loss of my me.
I realise that this is not my most cheerful newsletter, nor my best, but I am certain that you will understand that my thoughts are with my family right now. My uncle was a Catholic. I pray that God is waiting for him in heaven, and that it will be everything that he hopes for.
