Write What You Know, and then Learn More!

As writers, we often hear the adage, "Write what you know," but I think there's more to it!

It's great advice to start with what you know. Start in an area where you're familiar, where you feel comfortable, but don't get stuck there! Eventually, you're going to have to get outside of that comfort zone. I feel like most successful writers never stop learning and exploring!

I feel like that's where contests and activities can really help! Find a contest that offers a genre or prompt that inspires you to learn more! Start with what you know, sure. Incorporate your own knowledge and experiences into a character or an event in your story or book or poem. But then add something you don't know! Spice it up a bit!

I'd encourage you to look at contests and activities as places to explore and expand your writing. Research into a related field, or take something you know and combine it with something new!

One of the keys, in my opinion, is to explore something that interests you. If you find it boring, odds are your reader might pick up on that. Find something that excites you and try to convey that feeling in your writing so the reader is enticed and interested, too!

Write what you know, but then learn and explore! Most writers and intellectuals in general will admit that you never stop learning, so why not embrace it?

As always, keep on writing! *Quill*
