Letter from the editor

Dreams are a common, yet important thing. Many people have them. Some pursue their dreams throughout their lives while others keep them buried inside as only a hope for something that is different. For some people it's a dream career like to be a doctor, teacher or marine biologist. For others it is to live in a specific place like Hawaii or Los Angeles.

My sister's dream was to live in LA, hence why I live down in SoCal. There are lots of dreamers in and near the city with big hopes to get into show business, make movies, sell art or even dance. While there are many people who pursue dreams, there are also people who aren't able to achieve them. I'm not one of the dreamers trying to make it in the big picture industry or anything of that nature. I just happen to live here. While some dream of stardom, recognition or even being in the background of the industry, there are also plenty of small or more subtle dreams that get pursued every day.

Which brings us more to the topic since this is the Fantasy newsletter and not just for me to ramble. We are not the only one with dreams and it's something to consider when working on character and story development. In particular, the concept of dreams and wishes from life is a good concept to consider for the main character.

What is your character's dream? What do they imagine doing in the future or with their lives? Is there something they want to be or do when they grow up?

There are many different options both dreamful or more dramatic, depending on the situation, backstory and world. The pursuit of happiness is a dream. Revenge for a father's murder could be considered a dream that becomes a mantra they say every time they meet a potential match for the ultimate foe. Leaving a small town for something more exciting is an option but so is a return to a simpler life or going back home after whatever adventure they have to pursue ends.

The types of dreams and wishes a character has will show more about themselves and help to create a more rounded, relatable character for the readers. Plus, you don't have to stop with the main character. What about the villain or antagonist? What is their dream? World domination, the perfect fur coat, just the chance to be like everyone else.... there are many many different dreams and ways to use them to create the characters and their stories.

Whatever you choose, big or small, don't forget to let your characters have a dream. And consider your own dreams as well.
