About This Newsletter

Life throws us curve balls, running us through a gambit of emotions. The best emotion of all is happines, and nothing envokes happiness more than laughter. There is a science to making others laugh, and it is through that science that comedy has evolved.

This topic of this week's Comedy Newsletter is humor in awkward situations.

Letter from the editor

This past week was Father's Day, where my dear husband, Jason, thought that it meant life would stop and cater to him in appreciation for all he has done as my son's father. Not that I don't appreciate all of the hard work he has done, but on Mother's Day, both he and my son were sick, so I got no Mother's Day love. Obviously, my natural reaction to my lack of Mother's Day hand-and-foot catering was to pretend that Father's Day didn't exist.

Now, we didn't skip celebration of the day altogether. He received a brand new gas grill as his Father's Day gift. Ethan and I made him a card to give him Sunday morning. We made plans to go to my in-law's for dinner, so my father-in-law could break in the brand new grill he also received as a Father's Day gift.

Somewhere in there, Jason decided that he should be waited on hand-and-foot, and anyone who knows me, knows that wouldn't have happened unless he had no hands or feet with which to take care of himself. *Laugh* Along with that, anybody who knows me knows that I will then turn the tables on him and make him do everything as a form of going on strike.

In the meantime, we had gone to the store to buy the fruit salad to take to my in-law's. I didn't know how big of a mistake it was to go to the local grocery store instead of Sam's Club, until my father-in-law took his first bite of fruit. You see, even though the expiration date on the salad wasn't until the 19th, the fruit had already turned sour. It tasted horrible, and I felt horrible for serving my father-in-law rotten fruit on Father's Day.

So, the rest of the evening, I was known as "she who thanks her father-in-law and husband by purchasing rotten fruit." *Rolleyes* It'll be something I won't live down for at least the next year. But at least we were able to get a good laugh out of it later, when he asked if the apple pie I'd brought was made with rotten apples.

Situations can arise that require a good sense of humor in order to break the ice. Remember that even in the most serious situations, as a writer, you should try to keep the tension from becoming too much for your readers. Lighten the mood with a well-placed pun. But most of all, don't take yourself too seriously as you're writing and even as you're living your life.

Good reminder, Mel! I have survived many a trying situation by finding something in it to poke fun of or laugh at. I find myself lately forgetting that fact. Sorry about the loss in your family, but glad you got to walk down memory lane. With regard to my brother, I remember something every day...it helps. At the end, when all is said and done that's all we have are the memories. Good newsletter.

I appreciate the story on your uncle Bob, it was done fantastically in the face of tragedy.

Melissa, my condolences for your loss. You are so very right ... laughter is good medicine. Especially at such times as the loss of a loved one, humour is a precious way to remember the best times spent with the one who passed. It's not always easy to do, so I'm glad your Uncle was able to give that gift to you and your family.

Yes, Melissa, laughter does help almost all parts of our lives, and it helps heal if not used maliciously.

Thank you for all of your comments and condolences. It is much appreciated!

Until next month, keep laughing!
