Romantica


The romance industry is changing. It's always been open to exploring sexuality, but only on a surface level. Scenes were descriptive when compared to non-romance genre literature, but all in all, they were tame. Now, the industry is beginning to recognize mainstream acceptance of more sensual language in literature.

Many traditional romance publishers are now calling for more erotic works of literature. Harlequin and Avon romance publishers are both starting specific lines of romantica. Until recently, this was published primarily by smaller publishing houses, meaning that the market was limited. This also limited earning potential by authors interested in this genre.

These publishing houses are still calling for thoughtful works of romance, with all of the traditional requirements of plot and characterization. They are just adding a new level of sensuality in the descriptions of character intimacy. Adding these major markets to the romantica industry means there is a need for more romance writers.

Writing sensual literature is based on including all five senses. Think of a scene from five angles. Ask yourself what you would see in this situation, then what you would feel, hear, smell, and finally, taste. Include as many senses in a scene as possible to draw the reader into the moment.
