Valentine's Day Is Upon Us


Valentine's Day has pretty much one reason of being. That is to get people to purchase chocolates and presents for one another. Children as young as elementary school are trained from their earliest years on to purchase Valentine's Day "class sets." Those are pre-printed folding cards that say something along the lines of "You are my Valentine." Those "class sets" come in packages of 24. Because someone decided that the average class size in America is 24. Okay, if you think so, "class set" designer.

It would be nice if the day was a little more personal. Like a wedding anniversary or something that people celebrate with each other because they want to, not because society prescribes it. Luckily, for everything prescribed by society, there are those brave curmudgeons who just won't abide by it and they are vocal about it too. Because it was quite comical, I want to bring this old newsfeed thread to your attention. In my Valentine's Day Romance / Love newsletter from 2021, I asked "What would be your perfect Valentine's Day? Wrong answers only."
Here are all the zingers that came from it. "Note: View this Note"

Most of us adults who are aware of Valentine's Day know that many a romance poet has made sure to figure out a way to create a quote for the day. Who would have thought that Ursula K. Le Guin and Albert Einstein also thought about love? It does transcend science fiction and plain science.

Mixing genres is common and needed. There are very few types of fiction that can make do with just one genre. What about mixing Valentine's Day specifically with genres that are neither Romance, Love, Horror, or Erotica? Is it possible to write a Valentine's Day story that is set in a genre that usually overlooks this kind of event? Like what about mixing Valentine's Day with Finance, Men's, or Military? Do those things work together?

What would be the best other genre besides Romance / Love to mix with a Valentine's Day story?
