Special Interest Groups

Writing.com isn’t just a community of writers, it’s a community filled with diverse people enjoying a variety of interests from eating healthy to simply being amused. Out of these interests emerge specialized groups that can be found throughout the site. Besides the huge selection of writing and reviewing groups there are groups for just about everything under the sun.

I thought it would be interesting to highlight some of the unique groups I know about or have run across doing a simple group search. By the way, to do your own group search, simply go to “Item Jumps” under the Site Navigation menu and click on “Groups.” As of this writing I found 396 different groups. If you want to narrow your search by genre you can do that using the main search bar located underneath and to the right of the Writing.com logo or the Power Search at the bottom of the page. Simply select the genre you want, select “Groups” and hit “Search!”

Groups are terrific ways to meet people who share your ideas or passions. If you simply don’t find the group you are looking for, don’t be afraid to create a group of your own (You must have an upgraded membership to create a group.). It’s easy to do, though it can be some work to maintain, depending on the type of involvement you have with your group. To set up a group, click on groups and follow the instructions provided. It is very similar to setting up a static item or forum, but you will want to pay special attention to a couple of items under Section 5:

*Bullet* Welcome Item ID: In this box you put in the ID number of a static item you have created to welcome new group members. You do not have to create a special welcome static, though I think it’s a nice way to welcome your members. If this is left blank, a generic notification will be sent to group members as you add them.

*Bullet* Show GP Fund To: This controls who is and is not allowed to see how many gift points the group has accumulated.

*Bullet* Control of GP Fund: This is automatically set to a default level of 14. This allows you to let other members spend or give out gift points from the group. The members you want to have this permission must be set to the same level you have indicated here when you add them to your group.

Once you have created the group you will need to learn how to add members to your group if you plan on including others, besides yourself. To do this click on “Manage” from the tools area underneath the title of the item, or open the item and click on “Manage Members.” Read the instructions under “Maintaining Group Members.” This area explains the different member levels. Below this you will find boxes to add the members. You simply type in their user name (not their handle, but their actual user name) and set the level of access you want them to have. When you are finished, click on “Update Members” at the bottom of the list. Upgraded members are allowed 50 group members, Premium members are allowed 250 group members, Professional members are allowed 1000 group members and Enterprise members are allowed 3000 group members.

So, go out there and explore Writing.com. Get involved with the community by joining a group or two, or even creating one of your own. Whatever route you choose, have fun!

I hope you’ve found this issue helpful!

Hey, Terry! A couple things to keep you busy over the summer? *Pthb* As for future topics, you may want to cover the subject of judging contests. Though judging is one of my favorite things to do, I know a lot of people consider it to be difficult work. Still, it's an interesting topic to discuss, and I bet a lot of people have questions about it.

Great idea Elisa! Look for judging in an upcoming issue. *Smile*
