A curse is a desire that harm might come to a person, object, or place. It might just consist of bad thoughts or ill will, but also might be a specific spell or ritual intended to cause harm.

One type of curse that many cultures fear is the “evil eye,” a malevolent stare that causes harm, especially when the receiver is not aware that it has been directed toward them. Historical figures who were rumored to have the ability to cast the evil eye included Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Adolf Hitler. Josef Stalin is said to have employed a witch to protect him from the evil eye and other curses.

Hoodoo is a group of spiritual practices brought to North America by enslaved Africans and blended with some elements of Christianity and other beliefs. Hoodoo practitioners created curses by taking items such as fingernails, hair, and blood from the intended victim. These items were placed in a jar along with graveyard dust and buried under the victim’s front step to enact the curse.

Curses are popular in folk and fairy tales, such as Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White.

Many well known horror movies involve cursed objects. Examples include The Ring, The Grudge, and Blair Witch Project. TV shows that often involved cursed objects include Warehouse 13, X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Winona Earp, and Friday the Thirteenth the Series.

Any society that believes in curses has also attempted to find ways to break or avoid them. An amulet is an object carried or worn to ward off curses and other evil magic. A protective spell might be used to ward off the curse and possibly turn the evil back on the person who cast the curse.

If you base your story on actual folklore or mythology, do research to make sure the details are as accurate as possible.

Something to try: Write a horror story that includes a curse.
