― Sabrina Oyinloye

“The President held up a Bible, an assassin aimed a gun. What happened next?”
― Jeffrey Rasley

“Each of us has our definition of adventure: ending an unsatisfying
relationship, returning to school, parachute jumping or training for a
marathon. Go ahead. Get your thrill on.”
― Gina Greenlee, Postcards and Pearls: Life Lessons from Solo Moments on the Road

“What is adventure?

Adventure offers every human being the ability to live ‘the’ moment of his or her most passionate idea, fantasy or pursuit. It may take form in the arts, acting, sports, travel or other creative endeavors. Once engaged, a person enjoys ‘satori’ or the perfect moment. That instant may last seconds or a lifetime. The key to adventure whether it be painting, dancing, sports or travel: throw yourself into it with rambunctious enthusiasm and zealous energy—which leads toward uncommon passion for living. By following that path, you will attract an amazing life that will imbue your spirit and fulfill your destiny as defined by you alone. In the end, you will savor the sweet taste of life pursuing goals that make you happy, rewarded and complete. As a bonus, you may share your life experiences with other bold and uncommon human beings that laugh at life, compare themselves with no one and enjoy a whale of a ride! Letter from the editor

*Questionbr*Do you remember your first Adventure story? A page turner or even a movie that kept things moving fast!

A memory popped into my head while thinking about this theme: I recalled a book my mom read to us when we were young. I cannot remember when or what the book was even about yet I see the title and cover so clearly in my mind: "Adventure Girls in the Air" by Clair Blank. The cover was blue with a girl parachuting in the sky. It was a mystery and an adventure to find it on line. Written in 1936 by recently graduated Clair Blank, it was an old story by the time we heard it! Published by A.L.Burt ,who also requested 3 more books, which did get published by Saalfield after Burt cancelled it. The fourth was never published as it too was cancelled. Eventually the book lost its copy write and one can get it on line. However, it has been refurbed and republished.

*Think* Why do I remember it of all the books my mom read? She could not recall it either until we found a summary on line! Was it the word Adventure combined with GIRLS? Or just that memory of sitting on the bed with mom reading? I do not remember the high school girls who saw a plane crash and helped the pilot get the plane to a mechanic. He had a special patent for the plane and was delivering it when the accident happened. I do not recall the bomb incident and the as people try to get the patent. Nor did I remember that the main character helping the pilot was eventually lost in the woods with amnesia had all her friends searching for her. While reading the summary I had the thought that it was a quite an adventure for its time:

Elements of action, drama, intrigue, adventure and even mystery!

Movies from book like the Da Vinci Code, Indiana Jones, etc. have certainly those speedy twists and turns of action and intrigue, heroes travelling to places and being hounded!

One can feel the difference between those and longer adventure types like Lord of the Rings.

*Think* While considering this genre, I felt that so many stories could be considered Action Adventure. In fact most stories have adventure and action of or they would be boring.

Peter Pan for example is filled with those moments! Barry had Peter reflect also:
"To die would be an awfully big grand adventure!"

And Gandalf reminded Frodo of the dangers of adventures:

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,' he used to say. 'You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no telling where you might be swept off to."

*Laugh* Yep, I have felt like that sometimes and really life itself is the biggest adventure.

The basics of an Action Adventure genre include:

*Burstr* fast-paced, action-packed plot lines. A race against time!
*Burstr* Heroes often face life-and-death scenarios with twists and turns.
*Burstr* the main character may have be special, have a talent of some kind or be misunderstood by society.
*Burstr*dark, foreboding mood with an expectant tone because readers don't usually find out if the protagonist survives until the end of the story
*Burstr* clearly defined good and bad guys.

Even with these elements it overlaps other genres, such as romance, spy thrillers, military adventures and Westerns. Science fiction and fantasy can be in that class. I discovered that it can be hard for libraries and bookstores to set perfectly action adventure that do not include other classes.

The Amazon List of the popular Action Adventure include:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins {the series}
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan {the series}
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling {the series}
The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Other titles including classics that are posted as Action Adventure among other genres.

The Stand, Stephen King
Shogun, James Clavell
The Hunt for Red October Tom Clancy
Starship Troopers Robert A. Heinlein
Team Yankee Harold W. Coyle
Red Phoenix Larry Bond
The Call of the Wild Jack London
Moby Dick Herman Melville
The Odyssey by Homer

Now for me, I would want to check it they had other stronger genre categories. For example, I do not prefer horror/scary! *Shock2*

*Questiony* Why do you read Action Adventure tales?

I tend to be hyper so while I do like action tales, they can be intense. I remember when I was a young reader I would want to read the end first so then I could enjoy the read. Couldn't stand the unknown! LOL

Do we like to experience the excitement of the life and death stakes? Escape boredom?

Do we read for inspiration about overcoming our much less dangerous life situations?

Do we read to visit the wide variety of settings and wonder at the methods of escaping danger or surviving it? Do they appeal to the imagination? They can certainly take us into another reality!

Whatever the reason, stats show that they are popular and often make spectacular movies! *Wink*

Read on!
