About This Newsletter

Each New Year, we begin a new chapter in the book of our lives. It is a time of renewal and setting new goals. Hope is renewed, and, despite the cold weather, we look forward to longer days and the coming spring. The New Year is a new chance for happiness and a time to create New Year's resolutions and/or spiritual renewal goals.

Letter from the editor

A new Gregorian year has begun, and for those who celebrate January 1 as their New Year, it's time to make new resolutions. Making New Year's resolutions is an ancient custom, practiced by many religions--no matter when during the Gregorian year their New Year occurs.

New Year's resolutions were originally spiritual promises made to the Divine Creator. These promises or goals were intended to improve the individual's character and spiritual condition because they were made to the Creator. Modern resolutions are no longer made to the Creator, but they are still intended to help the individual make improvements in the way they live their life during the year.

I don't make my resolutions in January, since that isn't when I celebrate the New Year. I make my resolutions on March 21, which is Naw-Ruz. I can't say I've kept all my resolutions every year, nor can I say that it isn't a struggle to keep those resolutions. I consider keeping the resolutions as tests because whether I fail or succeeds I am strengthening my faith and spirit to do better the next time around.

The main lesson I've learned about making and keeping resolutions is to keep trying. If I fail at a resolution one day or one month, I can begin again the next day or the next month. I've also found that resolutions, especially those made in a spiritual context, help renew my soul and my faith.
