Letter from the editor

** SPIRITUAL WRITING **

Part One

When you are passionate about something a world of writing topics opens up. It is something you know a lot of facts for, have opinions about, and enjoy studying to learn more.

Being passionate can also provide the red pen some good workout as you strive to prepare an articulate, informative piece. That same passion can tend to bring out the ranter, preacher, or zealot in prose.

So how does one go about the process of choosing something to write in the Spiritual field. This is one suggested method for coming up with your idea pool.

<< Step 1 >>

Make a list of everything related to your spirituality you can think of. Everyone will come up with a different list according to their own spiritual road.
eg.
God, Jesus, faith, belief, Christian, church, service, love, family, morals, marriage...

<< Step 2 >>

For this step use as much paper as you need to. Separating each word/phrase from step one on a separate sheet or notecard may be a good idea, depending on how much effort one is prepared to put into it. *Wink*

Starting with the first word on your list, think of additional phrases, single words or thoughts associated with it. It does not matter if some of these words repeat words listed in step one.
eg.
God - Creator, Father, Heaven, His will, love...
Jesus - God's Son, Saviour, suffering, our example of how to live, perfect, sacrificial Lamb...

<< Step 3 >>

Now comes the fun part. Expand each of the words given in Step 2 into possible titles or topics for your writing. The nature of titles or topics will depend on the type of writing you do (short story, articles, poetry, etc). Some you come up with will suit a particular type of writing over others. You could notate the type you think it suitable for after it.
eg.
God the Creator - The Evolution Debate (A), The First Morning (P), What would have happened if Eve was created before Adam? (SS)...
God the Father - How God helps those who've lost their earthly father (A), The reason we're all called God's children (O), Fatherhood (P)...

A = Article; P = Poetry, SS = Short Story, O = Opinion piece
Note how my list includes both potential titles and subjects.

This exercise is a wonderful jumpstart for the inspiration, and is, of course, relevant for any genre of writing.

In the next issue I will focus on stage two of the spiritual writing process.

Till next time:

Ask & Answer

Q: "What's your theory on life?" A: Choosing. Choosing to be a child we took the first breath. Choosing wisdom we grew from childhood into adulthood. Choosing God's way we avoided the pitfals of sin and destruction. Happy are those who make the right choices.
Schreiben-Gal

Indeed, happy are those who make the right choice. For those of us who are dedicated to our Lord, we have the security of that knowledge. How sad to think of those who may find out their choices were unwise, when it's too late...
