Spring is just budding in April. The Daffodils are blooming. April 23-29 is National Library week. This year’s theme is “There’s more to the story.” I used to love visiting libraries when I was younger. Who remembers the card catalog? Nowadays libraries are filled with tons of options from DVD’s to ebooks. They even share museum passes and musical instruments.
Do you still go to the library? I’d love to hear some of your favorite memories, or about your last visit. If you write in, I’ll send a MB of my choice your way.
For me, 9-15 April is National Dispatcher’s Week. It’s nice to have a week to recognize my profession which can be very stressful.
Did you know? April 17th is International Haiku Poetry Day. That leads to me the transition for this newsletter’s topic. April is National Poetry Month and I’ll be taking a look at romantic poetry throughout the ages.

Romantic poems can take many forms, from haikus to sonnets, but all have similar characteristics that make poems “romantic.” These characteristic also make romantic poems different from other types of poetry. Exploration of self, of the physical world, of the person and creativity, of emotions are just some of these characteristics.
One characteristic that draws readers in is “intense emotion.” When one is falling in love, or in love, a person tends to feel that much more intensely. It’s not just love – other emotions include affection, or intense pain due to loss, or attraction due to physical beauty. Poets reach for extremely descriptive words, and even “beats” to capture that intense feeling. Beats include rhythm, sound, meter, and rhyme.
Another characteristic that draws readers in is to explore nature. Nature can invigorate us – body, mind, and soul or take us to the depths of sadness. An example, for me, of nature and exploring love through nature, is Robert Frost’s poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”
Here’s the verse that resonates with me:
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
It’s the hope and promise of the woods that tug at the romantic heartstrings here.
Another characteristic that draws readers in, is the creativity of your poem. It’s the word play, the rhythm, the rhyme, the meter and sound. It’s the visions you create with your words. How warm love can be, or cold your heart is after being shattered. Romantic poetry is more than just physical beauty, it’s an exploration of your passions in the moment.
