I wanted it to have a dark theme, possibly incorporate April Fool's somewhere within the newsletter, but alas, it was not to be. Instead, we will discuss best selling mystery writer Jo Nesbo, the famous Norwegian author. We'll take a closer look at Nesbø's background, his most famous novels, and explore the dark and intricate world of Scandinavian crime fiction. So, get ready to be transported to the chilly streets of Oslo and join us on this thrilling journey through the world of Jo Nesbø.{/linspace}

This month's April mystery newsletter will discuss the life and works of best selling Norwegian author, Jo Nesbo. The writer, Jo Nesbø, was born in Oslo, Norway in 1960. Nesbø's father was a Norwegian economist and his mother was a librarian. When Jo Nesbo first set out in the world, he went to university and completed a degree in both economics and business administration. He also worked as a freelance journalist and stockbroker before beginning finding a love for writing.
Nesbø began his writing career as a journalist and then turned to fiction, publishing his first novel, "The Bat," in 1997. Nesbø's books have been translated into more than 50 languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide.
Jo Nesbø has written numerous novels, but the most famous ones are the Harry Hole series. Harry Hole is a detective in the Oslo police department who solves complex crimes. This series is unlike many that I've read before due to the complexity involved with the detective and the mind of the killers Nesbo creates.
The series includes 12 books and has been adapted into a movie. My favorite from this series is "The Snowman", which brought a chill to my bones due to the macabre of this book and the killer's killing style. Brrr! Some of Nesbø's other popular books include "Headhunters," "The Snowman," and "The Redeemer."
When I was introduced to Harry Hole in the book, "The Snowman", I was introduced to man with unconventional methods for solving cases. Harry Hole, the central character in Nesbø's novels is a detective in the Oslo police department and is a recovering alcoholic that also has a complicated personal life. However, he is also brilliant and has a knack for solving the most difficult cases. Hole is a flawed and complex character that readers cannot help but root for.
In this issue, I will try to list a few of the books from his Harry Hole series. The first is "The Bat", and is book number one in the Harry Hole series. The next book is "Cockroaches" and no, there aren't any cockroaches in the book. Jo Nesbo has an interesting knack for titles.
The next book is "The Redbreast" and it is a heart pounder of a read. I'm jumping ahead to the seventh book in the Harry Hole series and it's titled, "The Snowman". This book just took my breath away and the starkness in Nesbo's writing is startling at times. He just blasts the reader with raw savagery and arctic harshness that will take your breath away. The lead character, Harry Hole is a solid character that uses complex methods to solve serial murders and there are many in this book. Once I started reading Jo Nesbo, I was a fan for life. And I think you will be too.
I don't know if you recall but late last year, I started looking at Scandinavian authors but didn't finish discussing them. Well, I am taking a small aside to continue this thought.
Scandinavian crime fiction has become very popular in recent years, and Jo Nesbø is one of the most prominent writers in the genre. Scandinavian crime fiction is known for its dark and atmospheric settings, complex characters, and intricate plots.
The genre has its roots in the works of Swedish authors Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, (who we will look at at a later date) who wrote the Martin Beck series in the 1960s and 70s. The genre has since evolved and expanded to include writers from all over Scandinavia, including Denmark, Norway, and Iceland.
Jo Nesbo has other successful novels and short stories such as n 2011, the Nesbø story Twelve was adapted by Magnus Martens into the film Jackpot (Norwegian: Arme Riddere), a black comedy crime mystery film.
In 2016, it was announced that there are also plans to adapt his stand-alone novel, Sønnen (The Son), as a film, to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, with Jake Gyllenhaal as producer and Channing Tatum in the lead role.
