Vulnerability - being open to the world. It is allowing other to see we aren't perfect, that we in fact, have issues, faults, and IMperfections. And this is okay! It is okay to feel afraid or nervous or be terrorized by spiders. It is being able to communicate that we are angry or sad or simply, overjoyed!
Poetry, good poetry, is the act of a poet opening themselves up, of letting our emotions flow like blood and letting our vulnerabilities show because it is these that connect us to each other. Do I want to read about the 'perfect' life, romance, or encounter? No, not really. There is no story there, no emotion, nothing to connect to. Nothing to empathize with. Nothing to get.
Being vulnerable or writing vulnerable poetry requires we flay ourselves open: the good, the bad and, yes, the ugly come flowing out. There is an abject honesty shown that we don't necessarily see elsewhere. A reality surfaces and in that reality is the true connection we aim to foster. The heart shows, the eccentricity shows, and our minds are given a freedom to express the (perhaps) hitherto unspoken: It a way that lets others know one can get through, get by, and get beyond. It speaks of unvarnished truth.
Being, allowing one's self to be, vulnerable in writing, is a way to speak your truth, as you see/feel/experience it. It gives you a power to make those important points, or to express the words too many leave unsaid. And in doing that, we also give others the chance, the opportunity to connect in that we have opened a pathway to communicate. Otherwise we are but writing 'full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.'

Aplogizing for a somewhat shorter-than-normal newsletter. My mouse curled up in a ball and died. Its connections disconnected. Not that there is ever a good time for a mouse to give up the ghost, but this morning it just faded off to mouse heaven. Which left my cut/paste abilities as well as my correction/editing necessities severely nonexistent!
