About This Newsletter

“A healer's power stems not from any special ability, but from maintaining the courage and awareness to embody and express the universal healing power that every human being naturally possesses.”
Eric Micha'el Leventhal

"Most women I know are priestesses and healers...
We are, all of us, sisters of a mysterious order."

Marianne Williamson

“The healing hero, therefore, is the one who finds some creative way out, a way not already known, and does not follow a pattern. Ordinary sick people follow ordinary patterns, but the shaman cannot be cured by the usual methods of healing. He has to find the unique way, the only way that applies to him. The creative personality who can do that then becomes a healer and is recognized as such by his colleagues.”
Marie-Louise von Franz, The Problem of the Puer Aeternus

“Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.”
Hippocrates

Letter from the editor

Have you considered using a healer to move your plot forward? Until recently, this was something I had never considered. At the end of May, I had to go to my doctor to discuss an unusual symptom I was having with my right leg. It made me wonder about using healers to move a story plot forward or reveal a character's personality or background. Contemplating this answer led me to ask the following question.

Who would your characters call in when they are wounded or ill? Would your character call for a shaman, healer, priest, monk, nun, magic user, or physician? That would probably depend on the culture and technology of the civilization in which your character was raised or lived. If your character follows a specific religion or spiritual path, they may want both a healer and someone to pray for them while they are being healed.

What type of spices or plants would a healer use? Some of the spices we use in cooking also have medical benefits. These benefits include such things as antiparasitic and antibacterial properties. There are also numerous other benefits that a bit of research will reveal. Almost any type of herb, spice, or plant with healing properties will be in a healer's medical bag.

Would a healer be a man or a woman? I do not think the healer's gender matters. A physician or healer can be either a woman or a man. Knowledge is the most important quality a healer, of any gender, can have. After knowledge the next quality is empathy or bedside manner. Used together knowledge and empathy will give the healer an advantage when it comes to performing their duties.
