About This Newsletter

What is the nicest thing anyone on this site has ever done for you?

It feels good when people do a kind thing for you. It can feel even better to do good.

This week's Action/Adventure Newsletter, then, is all about acts of kindness.

Letter from the editor

Have you ever experienced an act of kindness? I have. When I was about ten years old, my parents and I attended a parade of World War II veterans and a Canadian veteran walked up to me and gave me his flag pin. I don’t know why he chose me out of all the other children in attendance, but it meant a lot to me and I treasured that pin. It was a good teaching moment for my parents, too, helping them stress the sacrifice these men made for our country and the importance of showing them our enduring appreciation – that it had meant something to him to see the younger generation’s care and respect, which led to that kind gesture.

I’ve had people hold open doors for me, or let me go ahead of them in the supermarket queue if I only have a couple of items and they’re there with a big shop. I do the same in turn. Just like I’ll offer my seat on the train or bus if someone needs it more than I do. These small kindnesses can improve everyone’s day and may be just what someone needed in that moment. Once, when I let a lady go ahead of me in the queue she got tears in her eyes and told me she was having a difficult day and that I couldn’t know what it meant to her. I couldn’t, but I think we’ve all been there, needing life to run that little bit more smoothly. That’s why small kindnesses matter.

Here on the site I’ve received helpful reviews, supportive notes and anonymous kindnesses. You may not think that your reviews are an act of kindness, but they are. You’re spending time and effort helping another author learn and grow. Without the help of kind members during my years on this site I would not have improved as much as I have. I would not have been published. I still remember good words of advice and apply them to my work. Your reviews make a difference.

Sending an encouraging cNote to another author tends to bring a smile to their day. cNotes are like virtual postcards. You can find them under ‘browse by type > community notes’. If you have an upgraded membership, you can also create them yourself. You can send them with your name/handle attached, or anonymously. You can even attach some gift points if you’d like.

But acts of kindness don’t have to cost gift points, nor take a lot of time. One of the biggest kindnesses you can do for another author is to nominate excellent items of theirs to "The Quills [ASR]. The Quills are an annual awards ceremony, a bit like the Oscars of Writing.Com. There are a multitude of categories you can nominate people for, from poems/stories/articles etc written this year, to amazing reviewers, to the contests, activities and groups you’ve enjoyed. You can find a full list here: "Quill Nomination Form 2024 [E] and use the form to nominate as many items/people as you’d like. Just please make sure the stated criteria are met and that what you nominate is of a high quality.

It’s one of those facts of life that many people love to receive a nomination, but when they read an excellent item, or receive a super helpful review, they forget to take a moment to send in a nomination of their own. It does just take a moment, and it makes a big difference to how authors see themselves and their work. A nomination tells them that they’ve been noticed. That they’re a part of this community. That they’re on the right path – people like their writing/their reviews/their contests and activities. That they’re appreciated. It also gives them something to look forward to. A reason to be an active member of this website. It’s a positive experience all around and this, in turn, has a positive effect on the overall community spirit.

That’s why it’s important to not just stop by your friends’ portfolios to see if there’s anything to nominate. Cast a wide net. New members, old members, members of all case colours. If the Quills are to have value, they need to reflect the best of the community, not merely a part of the community – those who are the most ‘out there’, the most popular.

An active, involved community benefits us all. Compared to social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram we’re a pretty small community. To get the best out of it, we need people to feel included. To be seen, to know that they belong.

Those few seconds taken, then, to fill out the nomination form, have a widespread positive effect. I encourage you to include the form in your favourites list (double-click the + sign in the top right-hand corner of the item), so that you can access it whenever you need it.

It feels good when people do a kind thing for you. It can feel even better to do good. With this newsletter, I thank you for your acts of kindness. They are appreciated – possibly even more than you know.
