Don't Talk To Me
have noticed that lots of creative types are introverts. Are all creative types introverts? Well, of course not! Human beings are much too complicated to make things that cut and dried. I have just noticed as I spend more time around creative people, that they appear to be introverts, or they identify as introverts. I am one of those.
Were you about to Google the definition of an Introvert? HA. Beat you to it. Says Google: Introverts "feel more comfortable focusing on their inner thoughts and ideas, rather than what's happening externally. They enjoy spending time with just one or two people, rather than large groups or crowds." Naturally, due to the complex nature of humans, there is a spectrum of introvert-ness. I added that last bit.
Crowds, though. *Shutters*. No, thank you. I can handle crowds if everyone has assigned seats, I can handle crowds if everyone is spread out. It still exhausts me and makes me feel uneasy, but I can deal with it. I refuse to continue to fly Southwest because of their seating policy. They herd you into groups like a cattle call, then it is first come, first serve for choosing a seat. I always ended up sitting in a different part of the plane from my husband, in a middle seat, between two strangers who want to *gasp* talk to me. No! Just, no. Stop it. Leave me alone. Keep your elbows in the confines of your seat, don't ask me where I'm headed, and for crying out loud, don't introduce yourself. I don't want to know. It's better if you pretend you can't see me, then we will get along just fine.
I had a conversation with an extroverted friend about this just last weekend. She was lamenting that she had always heard about people that have had fabulous conversations with strangers on planes, but that had never happened to her. I laughed and told her it was because she was always sitting next to selectively social introverts like me, that find conversations with strangers to be painful at best. I've been friends with this woman for over thirty years, and think she forgets that I am an introvert, forgets that there is no way I could relate to being wistful about missing a mythically deep, life-altering conversation with a person I was randomly assigned to sit next to on a plane.
So, where was I going with all this? Well, that is always a legit question for me, but I will point out that there is so much potential for comedy writing using extrovert vs. introvert characters. I personally enjoy my extroverted friends and appreciate my introverted friends. Your readers can do the same with your characters.
