Letter from the editor

Did you participate in NaNoWriMo this year? How did you find the experience?

I didn’t take part last month, but I do remember from previous years that it’s not that easy to sit down every day and write a minimum amount of words. There were times when the words eagerly jumped onto the page, and other days when it was a struggle. Still, that daily routine proved beneficial, because I did meet the 50K target each year.

Creating good writing habits can be easier said than done, but they are worth pursuing. I’m the kind of person who can be rather chaotic, and having set goals, targets and routines helps me to get into – and stay in – a creative flow. I write a poem a week for the "Promptly Poetry Challenge (2023-2024) [E], enter at least one contest each month through "The Contest Challenge [13+], and I have signed up for "I Write in 2024 [13+]. These activities offer fun incentives to write and review, but mostly I participate because I love to write, yet I am sadly easily distracted. The public accountability that they offer helps me to challenge my brain when it insists that whatever I want to do can be done tomorrow, or the day after, or perhaps next month…

If, like me, you find lists and public accountability helpful, consider signing up for "Habit Heroes [13+]. Habit Heroes is a friendly, welcoming, non-judgemental space for those who want to get into better habits. The goals you set do not need to be writing-related. They can be anything, from going to bed at a certain time, to daily exercise, to getting your homework done. Everyone’s circumstances are different, so everyone’s goals are different – they’re all valid. You’ll receive daily encouragement and can earn a Merit Badge for each month of active participation.

Good habits can improve one’s quality of life. It may not be easy to get into them, but with time and perseverance you will see an improvement, and the day will come when that habit is just a part of who you are. For example, if you want to increase your water intake it may not be easy at first to remember to drink more, and you may wrinkle your nose at the idea of yet another glass of water. As time passes, however, your mind and body adjust and that’s simply your daily water intake.

Of course, that goes the other way around, too, and that’s why it’s easy to get stuck in bad habits. It is all too easy to doomscroll on your phone every day, to throw a meal into the microwave rather than cook from scratch, or to settle in front of the TV or the computer rather than exercise or get creative. You’re hungry, tired, it’s been a long day and you’re out of motivation. And you do need your rest. That’s true.

Taking some ‘me’ time in the form of a hobby or creative outlet is important too, though. Especially for those of us with a creative soul. I know that during my times of writer’s block and/or lack of motivation I was less happy and less satisfied with my quality of life on the whole than when I’m writing. The same goes for my walks over the hills. When it’s cold and/or raining it’s very easy to tell myself I should stay warm and dry, but both my mental and my physical health improve when I go for regular walks. It’s usually the case, too, that it can be difficult to motivate myself to do something, but when I am actually doing it I find that I’m enjoying myself.

It’s that time of the year when many of us are gearing up to take some positive action. You might as well get started with some small changes. If/when you do, you’ll find a supportive community ready to cheer you on. We are all in this together, after all. Come join the fun!
