Letter from the editor

I've often been asked where it is that I get my inspiration for my comedy writing and a lot of times I shrug my shoulders and say, "I don't know". The truth is my humor comes directly from my life and this point was ever present today when I had dinner with my mom, dad and younger brother...

My dad is now retired and he's been waiitng on his new teeth, because his real teeth are also retired. He's made several trips back and forth to the dentist to have his old teeth removed and to be fitted for the new ones. This took months of seeing my dad's gums flapping like a sheet on clothesline on a breezy summer day. This was kind of funny and kind of gross. Now he got his new teeth but he can't wear them because, as he says, "They nearly gagged me stupid!".

I don't think he can blame his teeth for his new intelligence level afterall this is the same person who had to use two different jacks to change a tire on my mother's van. Let me tell you this story...

Upon walking outside one Saturday morning my mother discovered that her left front tire was nearly out of air. She told my dad, who finished his cup of coffee and went outside to investigate. Yep, it was flat and he got the jack out of my mom's van and raised the vehicle high enough to remove the tire. Took the tire to the service station where they found and fixed the leak. He returned to the disabled vehicle in his driveway and started to put the tire back on. After a few tense moments a neighbor walked over and offered to help. No matter what they tried the tire would not go back on. Then one of the two "mechanics" decided that they needed a bigger jack to raise the vehicle higher. Finally they got the tire on and told me this story, where I had a question for my dad... "Dad," I said, "was the tire flat when you took it off of the van and did you take into consideration that a fully inflated tire would be taller... Here's your sign!"

My mother, who isn't normally scatter-brained as my dad, or the rest of my family, came up with a good one today. We were in the living room discussing my upcpming, life-changing anniversary. My mother said, "This year your birthday will be on the day that you were born" That was a great laugh right there.

I hope in the future you'll find your comedic voice from the very people that gave you life.
