I moved to Scotland last week. My husband had lived here before, but for me it was a journey into the unknown. I had visited in the past, but spending a day or two somewhere and actually going to live there are very different experiences. It’s a different system, with different bureaucratic obstacles, and a different culture, too. So far, however, I like it here. We shall see how I settle in.
Life is nothing without a little risk, but making big decisions can be daunting. I have moved countries before. It isn’t simple, nor straightforward, but I am glad to have taken a chance because despite all the difficulties there have been great rewards. If I hadn’t moved from the Netherlands to the UK I wouldn’t have met my husband. I wouldn’t have had the same educational opportunities. Perhaps my life in the Netherlands would have been wonderful in its own way, but I am grateful for what I have here. And now I have a little cottage in the middle of a beautiful area, with woods and lakes, streams and waterfalls, and wildlife right on my doorstep. I have a lot still to do, from paperwork to painting, decorating and unpacking, but I believe that it will be worth it.
Throughout our years on this planet we face many unknowns. Some people minimise them by staying in their place of birth and going into the family business. This is a solid choice and can no doubt lead to happiness. Others have – and take – the opportunity to see the world and I bet that’s an amazing adventure. I personally wouldn’t suit a lifestyle of hopping from country to country – I prefer being more settled than that – but I do understand the urge to explore and seek the best kind of life beyond the known. We’re not here for long, I figure, so we might as well make the best of it, and what that best is differs from person to person.
I like the Netherlands. Some believe that I must dislike it because I moved away from it. That is not the case. I miss many things about my country of birth. My family, of course, but also food, and traditions, and just a general Dutchness – every country has a certain feel to it that you won’t find anywhere else. After spending time in England and Wales, however, the Netherlands just didn’t feel like me any longer. It didn’t feel like the right fit. The moment I’d seen the White Cliffs of Dover it had felt as though I was coming home. I can’t quite explain it. Perhaps we aren’t always born where we are meant to be.
But then, how do we know? How can we ever know? We cannot try everything, nor explore everywhere. In addition, people change, and places change. The Netherlands now is not the same Netherlands that I left behind, and I have changed a lot in the years since I lived there. Likewise, I adore Paris. It’s always felt like a second home to me. I haven’t been able to visit in years, however, and the Paris I see in the news appears to have undergone changes, too. That means the known is connected to time as well as space, and at any point this can change into the unknown, ready to be explored all over again.
We can never know everything. Sooner or later we must make choices about who we are and where we want to be. For me, that choice was Scotland. I hope I can settle here. Find lasting happiness. I hope the same for you, wherever you need to be.
