Letter from the editor

By the time this newsletter is released, you may have noticed that something’s going on. That something is "Game of Thrones [13+], and it’s one of the most intense writing and reviewing challenges in the history of this website.

Game of Thrones is back after an extended break. The last time it ran was, I believe, in 2017. That means that you may not have encountered it before or, if you didn’t participate in a previous edition, you may have forgotten what it is about.

Above everything else, Game of Thrones is about community. You form a team with other members, and there may be some who you haven’t met before. When I first participated, back in 2016, I ended up in a team with many people I didn’t yet know, and I made a good friend along the way. Your team is up against the other teams for the throne, but you may well find some allies, rather than enemies.

This year, the journey begins in "House Of Black & White [13+], where each participant must complete the challenge behind the first door, and eventually unlock other forums and challenges. Even a glance at the first few challenges reveals that what awaits the participants is a variety of items and that they will be doing a significant amount of reviews, thus engaging with the wider community.

It takes a lot of effort to be a part of an event of this kind, and you may wonder what makes it worth it. Why would anyone want to spend a month of their life like this? Well, there’s a variety of reasons.

First of all, there are the friendships that I mentioned. By working together, you get to know what other people are like. When allied or competing, you get to know people, too. The shared experiences, and later memories, help to form bonds. It’s nice to be friends with other writers.

It’s also nice to contribute to the community. To support groups and pay attention to people’s items, and to encourage them and give them helpful feedback. Most of us, when we post work, would like for that work to be noticed. There will be a lot of reviews sent this month.

You can’t get insecure about your skills. There is no time. You’ll find yourself writing different items in different genres that you may not have even thought of writing in otherwise. Some you’ll enjoy; others not so much, but at least you know now. You’ve tried, and discovered, and in the process you will have grown as a writer.

You’ll end up with a variety of new items in your portfolio. It may well be that at the end of the event you’ll read back and delete some, but others will surprise you. Some may go on to win contests. Not all of my past Game of Thrones items are great, but I am very fond of a few of them.

The prizes are amazing. You’ll earn gift points, and a variety of exclusive Merit Badges. The more effort you place into the event, the more you’ll get out of it. You are also earning gift points for the group your team is playing for thus, again, assisting the community, and future events.

But, you might think, the game’s already started. The teams are formed. Why are you telling us all this? The reason is that it’s not too late to join! On the 7th of April, each team can add a sixth member. So, if you’re tempted, why not get in touch with a team? You might still get to play. Some teams are highly competitive and will require a lot of time and effort, whilst others are more casual and play just for fun. There is likely to be a team to suit you and your desired level of commitment.

The host of Game of Thrones is also looking for cheerleaders – people who encourage the participants. If competing’s not for you, you can still get involved this way.

And if you’d rather stay clear, well, it’ll all be over by May. The dust will settle, someone will have made it to the throne, and a load of members will breathe a sigh of relief that they’re done. Done.

Until next time. Because the thing about Game of Thrones is that there is nothing else like it. That’s what makes people dust off their shields each round. That’s what keeps them coming back. There’s nothing else like it, and it’s a lot of fun.
