Letter from the editor

What do you know about the newsletters (NLs) offered for your perusal on Writing.Com? Unless you’re reading this newsletter, or a different one, maybe nothing.

A little history. The first official newsletters were offered on WDC on June 5, 2001, while still operating under the name Stories.Com. Thus, newsletters have been around for a long time. They were introduced as an extension of the site’s gratitude for supporting the fledgling site. All official newsletters are written by Moderators and Senior Moderators.

Additionally, of the13 original newsletters introduced in 2001 (and which are still published today), there was a Sci-Fi newsletter. That newsletter lasted only 22 issues. But you can still access those NLs, as well as those newsletters older than 2005 by clicking on the link "Writing.Com Newsletter Archives.

More than 14 thousand official newsletters have been penned over the past 23½ years. That’s a lot of information researched and written for the members. In case you’re interested, the most newsletters for one topic has been Romance; sadly, the fewest has been Noticing Newbies.

In addition to the official WDC newsletters, there are groups who have published newsletters for their members over the years. I know of at least five newsletter topics written by various members. They include:

*Bulletr* Unofficial Reviewing newsletters. In "Reviewing Newsletters"   by vivacious there are 48 NLs listed.

*Bulletr* Unofficial Grammar newsletters. In "Grammarama"   by Davy Kraken there are 31 NLs listed. Plus, "Kiya's Big Book of Writing Guidelines"   by iKïyå§ama-House Targaryen lists an additional 16.

*Bulletr* The "Unofficial Erotica Newsletter Group"   by Jaeff | KBtW of the Free Folk published 198 NLs, which are stored in "Unofficial Erotica Newsletter Archive.

*Bulletr* "Unofficial Hero&Vill Newsletter Archive"   by Jaeff | KBtW of the Free Folk stores three NLs for the Heros & Villains group.

*Bulletr* "WC Newsletter Back Issues"   by Red Writing Hood <3 stores the NLs for the Writer’s Circle group. While many of the 72 newsletters are no longer available, 32 still exist and may contain information you might use.

If anyone knows about any other newsletters published by specific groups, please let me know.

You can access Manage Newsletter Subscriptions a couple different ways:

*Bulletg* Check out "Newsletter Area, or …

*Bulletg* Go to My Account (Navigation Menu) --> Account Settings, scroll down to Additional Account Settings --> Manage Newsletter Subscriptions.

Newsletters are some of the longest lasting, most effective, information disseminating elements on WDC today. I hope they help you as much as they help me. Take a moment to encourage one of the editors with a note. It IS appreciated.

Ask & Answer

Thanks for spending time with me today. At the bottom of every newsletter is a section entitled

*Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet* Don't Be Shy! Write Into This Newsletter! *Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet*

followed by a text box. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.

From the mailbag:

From Elycia Lee ☮ : Thank you for your newsletter, JACE - House Targaryen . I think even a lot of seasoned WDCers didn't know about the full extent of the Achievement badges. It's definitely a topic worth revisiting from time to time. What SM shared about reviews going up is definitely evidence that rewards motivate action. *Laugh*

         Agreed. And thanks.

From the Newsfeed:

From Jaeff | KBtW of the Free Folk : I try to spend about 15-20 minutes a day doing the requisite review, forum post, and newsfeed comment to keep the streaks alive.

I can meet that time ... provided I keep my review under control. *Wink*

From Ned : I am hard pressed to find time to do anything on WDC these days and I didn't even try for the badges for a long time, but I am now on my 6th day for two of them. I always log in so always get that one. I am hoping for a little more free time in September, but until then, at least I am participating a little bit each day.

         Any participation is good.

From Tannus : This has given me inspiration to get on WDC and write more. I enjoy the prompts and the responses of others. Time wise? I Now I usually come on 2-3 times daily.

         Thus, the reason for them.

From oldgreywolf scribbles : These awards are no different that the Good Conduct Medal with Oakleaf Clusters or the Service hashmarks I wore on my sleeve.
I choose to show up, do what seems interesting, often with a comment, and leave. Just like before.

And yet they were important. Thank you for your service.

From TheBusmanPoet : I concentrate solely where I've always gone to is logging into WdC and commenting in the newsfeed.

I'm up to 80 straight days for both. I don't do it for the badges which is a nice reward, but I do it for the interaction.

I suspect you're higher now. *Wink*

From Beholden : I log into WDC every day anyway, so that requirement is done almost before I'm awake. Then I answer the Small Talk question and write a poem for Express It In Eight with very occasional misses (so far, they've been done each day since the inception of the 7-day badges). Another one attended to.

Then there's the Newsfeed and I post and/or comment pretty frequently there too, so it's merely a matter of checking to see that I don't forget to complete this one. And the review a day has become a habit so that's in the bag too.

How much time does it take? Depends mostly on how long I decide to make the review. I take it seriously and most are over 1,000 characters long, but I had one recently that took 10,000 to get everything said. So it could be a couple of hours or a whole morning. But mostly it's what I would be doing anyway and I don't let it interfere with the real writing - it's the time-wasting activities that have to suffer there (goodbye, YouTube).

I admit that I sometimes wonder how long I can keep this up. But hey, at my age I've got nothing better to do.

         You can do it!

From Dave Ryan : I don't really set out to collect them - they just arrive when they arrive. I'm on a crazy streak for the daily visits - today makes 80 days on the trot - and I pick up a good few newsfeed ones as I'm never done wasting time sharing my wisdom here. Forum ones are a lot less frequent, as I'm less likely to put together 7 day streaks.

And as for The Badge That Shall Not Be Named...*Whistle* I occasionally get a "[REMINDER] Tips On Reviewing!" system email - I don't know if this is distributed generally or whether I'm being targetted. I fully expect these to start arriving with the words "HINT HINT" in the title.

PS. Does it irritate anyone else's inner fusspot that in the borders of these badges, if you start at the 12 o'clock position and go clockwise, the pattern of colours is dark-light-dark-light except for the newsfeed one, which goes light-dark-light-dark? it's like some subtle psychological torture designed to gradually drive you nuts.

Love your PS. Have never thought about that ... at all.

From Dave : I have been logging in and posting on at least one forum for a long time anyway. Remembering to post on the Newsfeed each day is new and takes a few more minutes. I am still having trouble finding the time to post reviews every day, given all the other activities here and offline.

         Ah, making the habit.
