There's beauty in magic, but there's also an ugly side to it. You cannot believe in one and not the other. Yet there are so many who don't believe in either, because it's not something a person can see. It is rather an experience. One that can make you question your reality, everything you've believed in.
In my previous newsletters I've talked about ghosts, things unseen but heard. Let's talk about the power of magic in this one. Let me tell about the world I come from. It's up to you if you'll believe it or not.
A few decades back, when my dad was still a child, he started having terrible migraines. So bad in fact that he would pass out from them. His parents, my grandparents, took him to all the possible doctors all over the country who couldn't figure out what the source of the problem was. In order to find a cure you have to find the source. Medication wasn't given out lightly. Many have tried but failed to diagnose him. As a last resort and being Catholic they took him to see a priest, who in return sent them to see an Imam. (Imam is a Muslim priest.)
He told them that he stepped on something intended for someone else. In that regard he also said that he was lucky to still be alive because the person it was intended for would have died from it. He read a few verses from the Quran and told them a few things they should do but there wasn't anything he could do to rid my dad completely of the curse. After all, you had to know what you stepped on, in order to counteract the effect.
For years, my dad dealt with the migraines. It wasn't easy watching a grown man almost fall to his knees when an episode hit out of nowhere. Until we moved - crossed the ocean. That is when it all stopped.
In my personal case - and at times I still feel like I've dreamed it all up - I started having night terrors. Not just nightmares, but I dreamed of my, back then boyfriend. I tended to dismiss the dreams or the connection of a lot of things. It's easy to turn a blind eye to many things when in a relationship, even though there's more to it. Then I went to Europe to visit my friends and the first step I made, made me feel a thousand pounds lighter. I felt a sense of freedom from something I couldn't quite put a finger on. However, when I came back, the same feeling, that weight, came back. Even after we broke up, I still felt it.
My friends and I decided to see a lady, a shaman in a way, who knew how to things and read them, and be able to tell you what ails you. It was a joke at first. My friend felt off and she wanted to know why. I never considered anything to be attached to me, but rather the fact that I refused to listen to my intuition for a long time.
As we sat there, the old lady read from the Quran - mind you, I'm a different religion but that's not here nor there - and each of us had a turn. We thought it funny at first, until we realized that there's nothing to laugh about. When it was my turn and she did her little reading and a whole lot of stuff I wouldn't know how to begin describing, she only looked at me and asked how bad my dreams were.
That right there made me forget all the funny things we said while at her house. She told me a woman did it; made something to make me lose my mind, and that's it's been attached to me for so long that she's not sure how I'm still sane. Mind you, losing ones mind doesn't always mean going straight to the looney bin. There are levels to the process and I've always looked back at my youth and saw a connection with the curse and my irrational behavior.
Perhaps my trips to Europe saved me. Made me shed the weight of what I carried a little bit at a time. Perhaps none of it was real or true. Only if you experience it can you really be a judge.
See, this particular newsletter was inspired by the previous one written by W.D.Wilcox  who talked about Croatian moras, which are nocne more, meaning night terrors rather than nightmares.
The upside down broom to ward off evil stood in our house for quite some time when I was little. My mom had always warned me not to go in people's houses because you never know what you might step on. This type of dark magic is hard to believe in, hard to grasp. Most of us believe in the good of people, but let me tell you something. If you go through things like this, you will be selective as to whose house you'll enter and who you'll have as friends. The people who seem the most normal will have a darkness attached to them that it's hard to shake.
And if you let yourself believe and open your mind you'll be able to see and feel a lot more than meets the eye.

I believe everything comes down to perception. In my teen years I lived next to a cemetery, so old the graves were starting to shallow. I'd lay on the graves and read in the summer sun, it was always peaceful, now my son resides in a beautiful one, wildflowers and the ocean waves you can hear, but visit no, too hard, and all don't hold the same charm they once did.
I believe you. When things happen to us, it's not easy to see the same beauty we did before.

I doubt you have a bad bone in your body but your mind might be more attracted to such things.  |
