Hello everyone,
I have the honour of being your guest Editor for this issue. I hope that you will enjoy what I have to say.
The last few weeks I have been pondering about love. This is not unusual for me, but this time I did not ponder about love of the romantic kind, not directly anyway. Nor did I ponder about love in friendship or love for family. I've been struggling with love for myself.
There's this saying that you cannot really love someone else unless you love yourself. I've always argued with this notion. I know that I am perfectly capable of loving others, but for most of my life I've not really liked, let alone loved myself.
I love my family, my friends and my pets. I love nature, Writing.Com, the world around me... but all too often when I look at myself in the mirror, I cringe. And the hours I've spent on analysing my faults are many.
So I believe it is perfectly possible to love others, but not love yourself. However, being in a relationship of any kind is far more complicated when you do not at least like yourself. The issues this brings into the relationship can be truly damaging. It makes it all the more likely to fail.
A lack of love for yourself is also a hindrance to spiritual growth – when we are too busy feeling guilty, worrying too much about the way we look and how others will see us, if we are unable to forgive ourselves for the myriad of mistakes we are all bound to make, we lock ourselves into our own little prison.
Many of us are occupied on a daily basis with our weight or our general appearance. Or perhaps we worry about the lack of a high-flying career, or never living up to the expectations of our family. Maybe we've made a mistake decades ago that still haunts us, and find it hard to move on from there. Some of us can be quite mean to ourselves.
When pondering this issue, I wondered if we are as harsh on others as we are on ourselves. And I came to the conclusion that this is not the case.
I don't care if a family member or friend has a bad hair day, or if they have gained a few pounds. I don't care much about their looks anyway, because I love them for who they are. I don't care about their careers, so long as they are happy in them. I am proud of them for their achievements, and support them when times are difficult. And if they make a mistake, I forgive them. I sure don't judge them for something they might have done years ago – we all mess up and people learn and grow.
It's amazing how understanding we can be, when it comes to others. Why, then, can't we be understanding when it comes to ourselves?
Perhaps it is time to try see ourselves as others see us, and accept ourselves as others do. Be that bit nicer. If we are less preoccupied with the negative, perhaps it will lead to more enjoyment of life in general, and give us more time for spiritual growth and happiness.
I'm going to give it a go, and if you are as harsh on yourself as I am, why not give it a try? If it works for you, do let me know  .
