Writing Groups and Forums


We’re over a week into 2007 and most of you have probably made your New Year’s resolutions or at least thought about them. Some of you may have already broken them. Me? I’m still thinking about mine. I have a few ideas, but haven’t solidified any yet. If you’ve already made yours or are planning to, don’t forget to create a static item and enter it in "Dear Me: Official WDC Contest"  [E]! The deadline for the contest is 9:00 PM, WDC time, January 31!

Seeing as this is a writing website, I will hazard a guess that many people have made some sort of goal to write more, or to improve their writing, or maybe even to have something published. These are terrific ideas and Writing.com can help you with all of them!

Writing.com members have created a variety of writing groups and forums that open to other members of the site. Some of these groups are genre specific, others span all the genres. Some groups use prompts to help spark ideas, others allow you to create your own. Some groups are small, with only a few members, others are quite large. The point is, if you look, you will find a group or forum to meet your writing needs. If you don’t find exactly what you’re looking for, why not start your own?

SHERRI GIBSON says, “Another outstanding newsletter, Terry. You're so right about auctions. If the donators don't fulfill their obligation, it makes the auctioneer look bad, not to mention decrease their chances of having others participate again. Contests and auctions are a blast!” *Bigsmile*

Yes, Sherri, it does make the auctioneer look bad. Luckily the auctioneer has the power to remedy the situation by either fulfilling the obligation directly or returning the gift points to the purchaser.

kiyasama says, “Wow, talk about an informative and great newsletter in regards to Auctions. To be honest, I think those are the toughest to get organized and to get people interested in. It's all well and good to get things going, but when the party ends and it's time to get both donors and recipients on the same page, that can be the tricky part. I usually have a journal labeled 'AUCTION' and tend to keep all information there so I don't miss anything.

Good idea with the journal, Kiya! When running an auction, you must do whatever it takes to keep track of everything or you’ll end up with a lot of unhappy people.

Robert Waltz says, “Good bit about auction setup, Terry. One thing that might be good to address, though, would be how many items an auction should contain - not so many that people get confused or overwhelmed by choices; not so few that there seems to be no choice (and no interest) at all...”

Great idea, Robert! Personally, I think that 15 – 20 items works best. If you get more donations, you can always split the items up into two auctions and run one right after the other.
