Letter from the editor

The romance of anonymity

It is that time of year again. Cupid is priming his arrows for the most celebrated day of love in the world. Yes, Valentines Day will soon be upon us.

This is your chance guys, the time when even the most unromantic of you can do something special for the lady is your life, even if its just going to the shop for some flowers and a card.

This is also a time of year that you can be a little bolder, tell that someone you’ve have your eye on for a while but never had the courage to say anything, and all whilst remaining anonymous. There has to be something said about the thrill and excitement of knowing that someone has feelings for you, but you do not know who. And of course that works both ways.

I remember once, I must have been around sixteen; I received a valentines card from a secret admirer. The card was beautiful, home made with little paper flowers on it. I still have it in my little memory box. It was weeks and weeks before I found out who the admirer was, but those weeks were amazing. I kept finding little presents and clues hidden around for me to find. That admirer ended up being my first love.

From a writing perspective there is a hundred and one different ways we can keep a character guessing who their admirer is. We can write from the admired or the admiree’s point of view, we can take the characters on an amazing adventure as they try and uncover the truth behind the secret. Valentines is an excellent time to get really romantic and have some fun. So get your artistic pens flowing and stoke the fire with some anonymous love.

To celebrate the most romantic day of the year, try your hand at my contest.
