 Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter!
Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com
We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. By introducing ourselves, reviewing items and reaching out, we will not only make them feel at home within our community, we just might make new friends!

Genre
Genre is the category your writing belongs to. On Writing.com we have many genres to choose from. What is even better, each item can be listed under any three of these genres at once.
Imagine if libraries shelved novels under headings of Romance, Horror, Adventure, etc. You wander in and begin browsing the shelves. Feeling in the mood for an adventure story, you head to that section and browse. There's nothing there that interests you. Perhaps a romance might satisfy your reading pleasure. Swapping sections, you comb the titles in romance. There is one cover which looks enticing, and you take it off the shelf for a closer look.
The story involves a woman, lost in the jungles of Borneo. Abandoned by a crooked tour guide she has to fight her way through the wilderness and many dangers -- human, animal, and environmental. Along the way she is captured by a lone guerilla soldier. As he marches her on the trek to his outfit's hideaway, a relationship develops.
Wow! Just what you were wanting - an adventure story - but it was in the romance section.
Now just imagine if there were two copies of the book. One shelved under Adventure and one under Romance. The book would have been discovered on the first trip to the shelf. How many readers would have given up at the adventure shelf? Or maybe gone to the Mystery section and never found that book waiting for them over in Romance.
Here on Writing.com we effectively have the ability to 'shelve' an item in three sections of a very vast library. The potential to capture a reader is therefore trebled. To use anything less than three genres only serves to reduce traffic to your item and therefore to your portfolio.
Someone searching for Horror might never find and read an item because it is only listed under Ghost. By not utilising the three genres, a writer is missing out on potential readership.
The other common fault is to use "Other" as a genre. While this has its uses, most often people are applying it incorrectly. When you've written a piece think about the subject. Usually there are a dozen different genre possibilities and the hard part is choosing only three. 
Don't shortchange your views and reads/rates/reviews. Assign three genres and maximise the visibility of your item.

Welcome to the site. Thank you for giving us your comments. 
I think the people of writing.com should do more of this. New writers have it tough, I should know I'm one. We don't have many gift points, not many people read our stories and we have to review, review, review, review, before we can get anywhere. It wouldn't hurt at all to have some free publicity every once and a while.

It is not specified exactly what we should do more of, but I think you mean featuring members items in the newsletter. There are a total of 13 official Writing.com newsletters and each of them features a selection of works by members, every week. There are also many unofficial newsletters, and the majority of these also feature member's writing.
