Noticing Newbies Newsletter is geared to help members get acquainted with Writing.com. There are many things to do and learn. Our goal is to help you make your time here more fun and manageable.
Each week we select and showcase new items (poetry, short stories, essays, campfires, polls, etc.). Exposure for an item (your writing) helps to bring you more rates and reviews by fellow members and the general public...of course depending on how much exposure you want your item to have. Some writers like to keep their work private. When your work does receive exposure, it also helps bring more member interaction, which will give you the opportunity to build new friendships. Remember, it is a two-way street, so try to make an effort to reciprocate reviews.

Hello Newbies!
Welcome to all who just joined the site and to returning readers. It's good to have you. Last month I wrote on lyrics and after realizing I can't possibly write on the subject in one edition, I'm going to write a series. So to those writers who have never written lyrics and would like to learn or you want to brush up on your skills, stayed tuned there's much to cover.
Hopefully you are motivated and full of ideas! Well, at least motivated, we can talk about subject matter. What exactly are you going to write about? One thing is for sure, "LOVE" is the most popular subject, especially if you make it personal...the audience is interested in learning about you in the song, but be careful you don't want to make it so personal that people can't relate to it somehow. Also writing about another point-of-view romance is fine too. It's important ot make your lyrics believable. Now, it doesn't have to be true, just believable for the audience to go along with the song.
Many writers like to write message songs, for instance, they overcame depression or a breakup with a girl/boyfriend which is fine, but not always because even though you may think what you are going through is unique, it isn't, sorry to say. Millions of people go through tragedy. If you decide to write an emotional song on a painful experience, make sure you communicate it in a fresh way that gets your message across to the listener...hook the audience with a catchy phrase. For example, Billy Ray Cyrus's song "Achy Breaky Heart" talks about a woman who basically leaves him for another man, but don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart....catchy right!

Whatever you decide to write about, write it out, then edit it to read like a conversation...create a visual to give the listener something to imagine.

Since Steve Perry's departure, the group has had two lead singers, Jeff Soto is the current singer, he's good, but Steve will always be the heart of the group:

I love this newsletter more than any of the others. I believe it is due to the fact that there are so many newbie writings posted, and it helps me to meet some of them through their stories and poems. Thank you for this newsletter.

Goodness, Laurencia. How old are you, anyway? I remember those singers from MY teen years. 
 Oh boy, I know I'm getting old when I'm asked this question, lol! I am 42 going on 22! I love all kinds of music starting with the 60's til now. I'm currently listening to the band Journey in my car, remember them? The group is actually touring right now, but without the original lead singer Steve Perry, who I miss, but don't believe he will ever return to the band due to personal reasons.

One of my favorite things to do is get the rhythm of a good song in my head and then write my own words. This is fun with Christmas tunes and waltzes, too. Oh, and children's songs! *grin* And it really doesn't have to end up being lyrics if you don't want it to. The finished product could be a regular poem. It works out rather well, especially when you're feeling stuck. *grin*

Hey Cubby! Yes, getting a rhythm in your head is a great way to write a song, and you are right it doesn't necessary have to be lyrics, poems work too, whatever gets you writing!. Good to hear from you.

Thanks for your letter on using music lyrics to inspire your writing. This has been very helpful to me, especially in my fiction writing. I know a song lyric about "the shadow within me" kept me on track to finish my latest suspense story. Somtimes, a song stuck in your brain can keep you focused!
