About This Newsletter

Writing poetry specifically for contests is not only fun, but challenges the best in all of us. Even if you’re just polishing up an old piece, it stretches the mind, the heart and the soul. Don’t be afraid of entering contests, you never know, you just might win!

”Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.”

Poetry Contests

Writing.com offers a wide variety of poetry contests. Some of the contests are a one-time only contest, some are seasonal and others are on-going. To find poetry contests, check out the "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com in and out. It will show you the latest fifty contest listings that have been posted (not all will be poetry, so read the descriptions to find out). You can also do a search for poetry contests and click forums under “any type” since most contests are run in a forum format. Also, keep an eye out on the sponsored item list as many people advertise their contests.

Things to keep in mind when entering a poetry contest:

*Note1* Make sure you read all the rules!

*Bullet* Verify the beginning date and deadline of the contest. Don’t enter before the start date and make sure you post before the deadline.

*Bullet* Post in the required format (i.e. bitem) or check to see if you can post directly to the forum.

*Bullet* Check the rules for any specific form required (i.e. haiku, pantoum, free verse, etc.) and for any length requirements or restrictions.

*Bullet* Make sure you know if you need to write for a specific genre (i.e. romance, horror, sci-fi, etc.) and then stick to that genre.

*Bullet* Look to see if any prompts are given (i.e. titles, words or phrases that must be included in your poem) and make sure to include them.

*Bullet* Pay attention to whether or not you can enter poetry that has already been posted to the site or whether the poem must be a new piece written specifically for the contest.

*Note1* Now go out and write a terrific poem or enter your best effort in your favorite poetry contest!

Let your love of poetry shine!

P.S. I started as an editor on the Poetry Newsletter a year ago and while I love bringing you new topics each month, I am finding my time is squeezed more and more. Some of you know I am a full-time college student as well as a single mom, and unfortunately, something's gotta give. This Poetry Newsletter will be my last regular edition. I will try to pick up a guest editor spot if time allows. It has been my pleasure to be an editor and I will continue to bring you the Contest and Activities newsletter once a month. I also plan on doing another 21 Days of Poetry Challenge in December, so look for an announcement in the C&A newsletter or my blog! Best wishes to you all and happy writing! *Smile*
