The Art of Organization

When it comes to pulling off a successful contest or activity, many factors contribute. Is it unique and interesting? Are the prizes appealing? Are the rules clear? Is it getting enough exposure? Is it timed right? All of these things play a part, but when you get down to the nitty-gritty, if the host isn't organized, the contest or activity is likely to end up a mess.

*Note6*Tips for Organizing*Note6*

*Bullet*Check out other successful contests and activities. Emulate don't duplicate.

*Bullet*Contact the hosts and ask questions. Most people are willing to give you tips on how to be successful.

*Bullet*When using gift points, whenever possible, set up a separate group for storage. By storing gift points in a separate group set up specifically for your contest or activity, it is much easier to keep track of them. It also let's other people see that you are using the gift points the way you intended.

*Bullet*Be logical. Place any graphics or welcome messages at the top. Next state the dates of the contest or activity, or if it's an ongoing item, list the deadline. Follow that with your guidelines/rules. Then you can list the judges and any specific judging criteria or list the prizes/awards (these two things can be reversed). Finally, list any contributors or acknowledgments along with a link to your group for donations.

*Bullet*Use WritingML. Using different colors and symbols can help you section off each part of your contest or activity. Don't forget to title each section, as well.

*Bullet*Use blank space. Leave plenty of blank space between the sections to help people distinguish between each.

*Bullet*Make a list or use a spreadsheet. Keeping track of specific entries or items can be tricky. Don't depend on your memory. Write down important information in a notebook, in notepad or in a spreadsheet.

With a little organization, you can keep yourself and everyone else from being completely confused and help ensure some fun instead. I hope you’ve found this issue helpful!

Ask & Answer

Feedback pertains to "Contests & Activities Newsletter (July 11, 2007).

"terryjroo, A good, interesting piece on scrollies. There will probably be a run on it now, better move out of the way. *Delight* You've linked some great items, too. Thank you!"
~esprit

Thanks, Esprit! We move pretty quick in scroll, since we're all hyped up on chocolate, so let them come. The more, the merrier! *Wink*

"hi, ter--
great tips on the scroll talk. so far, i've been intimidated by the whole thing, and have avoided chat & scroll, both--they're not quite as scary, now. thanks! *Bigsmile*"
~Lauriemariepea

Thanks! Hope to see you in scroll soon!

"Thanks terryjroo. Indeed, this issue was most helpful. *Smile*"
~Kenzie

Thanks, Kenzie! Good to see old friends reading. Pop in sometime and we'll share some chocolate! *Wink*

"Great newletter on Scrollies, Ter! It took me a couple weeks after I joined to find this unique sub-community, but I'm soooo glad I did! We have so much fun in scroll, and I have learned more about WDC by asking questions there. It's also a great place to get help with something you're working on, or get some more ratings/reviews of pieces. I love it! *Bigsmile*"
~Seisa-sleepingcatbooks.com

Thanks, Seisa! Scroll is full of fun and helpful people! *Smile*

"Just thought I'd mention that scroll is only available to Upgraded members and higher. If you're not Upgraded, then you can't see or do a thing."
~Breezy-E ~ In College

You bring up a good point Breezy-E. You must be upgraded or above to post to scroll, but other members can view it. Thanks for the reminder. *Smile*

"Thank you for this introduction to Scrollies - I had it turned off in my Preferences and had no idea it even existed!"
~Ladyoz

Glad you turned it on again, Ladyoz! *Smile*

"Cool! I didn't know about Scrollies! it sounds like fun. I may try it sometime. Maybe I'll get my sister to try it first, though, if scrollies are as you say. Thanks"
~andromeda

Oh, we're really not that scary! Come on by, just don't forget the chocolate! *Laugh*

"Thanks for the explanation of the changing colors in scroll games---never knew that!"
~ridinghhood-p.boutilier

Glad to be of some help! *Smile*
