Action and adventure are with us from the time we first start walking. Every step takes us closer to that new frontier, somewhere we've never been before. Each year brings us a new adventure, loaded with plenty of fun and excitement.
Maybe that's why action/adventure movies are so popular; they remind us of those magical times from our childhood.

Where's the Action???
You get an e-mail review and click it open. "It needs more action." the reviewer says first. You stare at that line in shock. What does the reviewer mean, more action? My story is filled with action.
One review like this could just be a fluke. But if you are getting review after review saying the action in your story falls flat, it is time to take a critical look at your story, and your action. Even if you feel your story has enough still check these action-draining issues.
Here are some of the things you should check when editing your story.
Problem: Action is happening too fast or slow. Moving an action scene too fast or slow is a sure-fire way to lose a reader. You want your action to carry your reader along without boring them.
Solution: Every scene has a rhythm to it, you just need to find yours. Re-read your favorite action stories. See how the authors pace their plots. An action scene should be exciting and draw the reader into the tale.
Problem: Why was that scene so important? You might not think that character motivation can affect action, but it does. If the character doesn't have a clear reason to do what he did, then your reader isn't going to care about whether he succeeds or not.
Solution: Don't write action just for the sake of action. Give your character a great reason to want to succeed. Make their reason so important the character is compelled to finish, no matter what the odds are.
Problem: There was too much or too little description. This one can be a real bear to figure out. How much is too much description? You want the reader to be able to get a mental picture of your scene, but not be inundated with descriptions. Likewise, you don't want to be stingy with your descriptions either.
Solution: This one is a little tricky. It requires you to really look at your story objectively. It's no longer your story, but something someone else wrote. Take a highlighter, any color, and go through your tale line by line. Highlight all of the descriptive lines. See how many, or few, ones you have. You want to find a balance between description, dialog, and raw action. Remember, you don't have to give every detail all at once. Sprinkle your descriptions in throughout your scene and you'll do fine.
Action tales should be exciting, adventurous, and above all, full of action! Otherwise they wouldn't be called action stories
