I love to review. Even though I don’t have as much time for it as I used to, I try to do at least a couple of reviews each week. I feel that reviewing is an important part of being a member of Writing.Com, at least for me. Just as I hope that people give me feedback on my items, I think that it’s nice for others to receive feedback, too.
I also hop over to the Public Reviews page a couple of times a week, sometimes more. It’s interesting and helpful to see how other reviewers offer feedback. There are so many different styles and uses of WritingML. Some reviews are very in-depth, others are quite brief. Personally, I am a big fan of in-depth reviews, but I think that the variety of feedback offered is one of the strengths of this site. Each style of review serves its purpose in helping authors learn and grow.
You may be wondering what reviewing has to do with this Newsletter. After all, I’m supposed to be talking about spiritual matters. The reason for discussing reviews is that sometimes I come across reviews in which the reviewer criticises someone else’s viewpoint, rather than offering feedback on the item. This can be daunting to an author. And this is certainly the case when the item in question falls into the Spiritual genre – the topic of the piece is likely to be close to the author’s heart, because faith and spiritual growth are very personal.
Variety is a wonderful thing to me. I love that this site has members from all over the world. I love the variety of cultures, views, faiths and experiences. Together, we make up a unique community here on Writing.Com. That’s something to cherish.
It’s important to remember that not everyone shares the same views, or practices the same faith as we do. Some people do not practice any faith at all, but may still be on a spiritual quest.
When we look for items to review, we may come across some that express thoughts and views that we may not agree with. With so many items on the site, this is almost inevitable. If I find a piece I do not really enjoy, just because I truly cannot agree with what is written, I ask myself whether or not I can offer helpful feedback on the content. After all, I am not reviewing the author and their views; I am reviewing the piece itself, the writing that is posted on the site.
Most often, if I look at it from that angle, I find that I can offer my thoughts and feedback on the item. In some cases, if I feel that I wouldn’t enjoy doing so, I move on to another item. Reviewing should at all times be helpful and encouraging. It should also be enjoyable. I think that if you don’t enjoy reviewing something, this will affect the feedback you’ll provide.
I’m sharing my personal views on reviewing because I hope that they will be helpful to others. With so much fuss in the world about what we believe and what route we take to spiritual enlightenment, it is a nice thought that on Writing.Com we can express ourselves freely.
We don’t always have to agree with the other. But let’s learn and grow together as writers. That’s what we signed up for, isn’t it?

catnap - Good point about why we write. I lost a dear friend in a car accident a couple of years ago and it seemed like words just continually flowed out of me at that time. Later, the faucet shut off and I realized that my writing was what helped me work through my grief. Spirituality definitely enhances creativity. Good newsletter and welcome back!

Zeke - I agree that if you choose not to interact with the world around you, you won't get any inspiration and will not be motivated to write. On the other hand, just dealing with the wide variety of people around us causes our imagination to take flight. Writing is the result. Good point. Zeke

wana  - Hi!I'm new here.I just read ur letter, how you related spirituality and creativity. You have certainly opened my eyes on these two concepts.
Lately, these two which I consider as important facets of my personality have suffered a setback due to my very busy work schedule.But now, my sked is not so tight anymore. And i'm glad that i've come across this email address in the net.I look forward to learning more about writing and to sharing my thoughts and feelings in the net, and in the process,I really hope to gain more friends who share my passion for writing.Thanks for enriching me with your letter.I'm so glad you're back, which coincided with my luck in finding this space on the net.
