Welcome to the Contests & Activities Newsletter. I’m spidey , and I'm your Editor this week. I'll be discussing Product Reviews. Pay attention, as there will be a quiz on this. (Okay, not a quiz, but there is a contest! Read through the newsletter for details!)

Product Reviews

Product Reviews are in-depth critiques of books, music and movies given by Writing.Com members. Searching for that perfect book, film or CD? Then start here! If you find that you like a certain Writing.Com Author, you might also find that you enjoy the same media. Each Product Review also helps support Writing.Com through our link to buy the reviewed product from Amazon.Com. Writing.Com earns a commission on any purchases made through these links.

Product Reviews can be used to review books, movies, cds and more. Let's take a look at reviewing a book.

A step-by-step guide to creating a Product Review

Step 1:

Click on "Product Reviews" from the list at the top of each WDC page or by using the Site Navigation tool on the left (Choose "Product Reviews" under Item Jumps).

Step 2:

Click on [Add a new Product Review]

Step 3:

Enter the ASIN. At https://www.amazon.com, every item has a unique number (like the ID number on items here at Writing.com). To find the ASIN for the item you're going to review, search for it at https://www.amazon.com The number is generally found in the "Product Details" section and it is a ten or thirteen digit number. (With books, the ASIN is the same as the ISBN.)

Click the "Review!" button

Step 4:

Complete the Product Review Form.

Content Ratings - Using the "Content Rating System (CRS), choose an appropriate rating for the item you are reviewing. Then choose a rating for the content of your review of the item.

Product Review - Fill in the appropriate fields. Remember, these are not required. Often, a few of them may not apply to your review or to the item you are reviewing. Fill in the appropriate fields.

Product Ratings - These fields require a rating anywhere from N/A (not applicable) through 5 (the highest rating). If a category doesn't apply to the book, choose N/A. Otherwise, choose a number from 1 to 5.

Step 5:

Click "Store This Review" and you're done!

A few things to remember:
Product Reviews are your way to let others know about books, music, video games and movies.

1. Grammar and spelling count! Be sure to double-check for errors.

2. Keep it simple! Give enough information to give the reader a good idea about the item, as well as your opinion on the item. It isn't necessary to go into too much detail, though. Be simple and direct.

3. Be honest! Give your honest opinion on the item you are reviewing. If there was an aspect that you particularly liked or didn't like, state that, and explain why. It will help others make a decision on whether or not to purchase that item.

Did you know?

Did you know that you can view all your Product Reviews? Click on "My Places" in the Navigational Tool on your left. Select "My Product Reviews" next.

Did you know that you can link your Product Reviews just like linking an item? Use the {PR:######} or {bPR:######} tags to link your Product Reviews!

Did you know that you can sort Product Reviews by type? Click on the box next to "Narrow by Product Type" and choose one of the options. This will narrow the list so you can browse a specific type of product!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter gave tips on hosting and entering contests.

Great newsletter, Spidey! I love the Halloween showcase - what fun! *Smile* ~ emerin-liseli
Thanks for the encouragement! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! *Smile*

Very informitive newsletter, Spidey. And Happy Anniversary! *Thumbsup* ~ billwilcox
Thank you for both! I happily celebrated my 5th wedding anniversary on Halloween this year, and I look forward to many more happy years. *Smile*

Sorry, wanted to vote but couldn't. My option is not listed. While I can enjoy the aforementioned items, I actually prefer Statics - novels, poems, short stories, etc. Thank you just the same. ~ DL Bach
Thanks so much for the feedback! The poll purposely did not include statics, as I was curious as to which activity was favored, but I'm glad to know you enjoy statics on WDC so much!

Welcome aboard!! *Smile* Congrats on the soon-to-come position. *Smile* Thanks for mentioning the bit about the "Contest" genre *Wink* ~ Tigger thinks of Prancer
Thank you, and you're welcome! I don't remember where I first heard that tip, but I know I was also grateful for it.

Spidergirl, good job on the newsletter. For me, the last tip you offered was the most striking. Yesterday I tried to browse the contest genre, only to find 99% of what displayed to be individual contest entries, rather than contests themselves. And since I'll be making entries myself shortly, that tip also saved me from making a mistake. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. You'll make uber contestants of us all. *Smile* ~ MetaphorSquared
Thanks! I'm glad my Newsletter has helped you!

Yes, Hi Spi! Glad you point out judges/ hosts/ are the ones posting what you term: What they are willing to read -- me: length. DECENT Word counts are disappearing off the face of the earth. Did you ever notice? Then there's always something that the AUTHOR left out. Poor fiction -- where's the hope anymore? ~ April Sunday
It's great that you're willing to read longer works! Judges like you offer a great variety for contestants! The longer items have a place, too! *Smile*

And once again, here is that poll, asking which type of activity is your favorite:

I'm curious. Which is your favorite type of activity* here at Writing.com? Choose among those listed.

(*Please note: By "activity," I mean interactive activity such as those listed in the options. I purposely did not include writing and reviewing.)
      Polls
      Surveys
      Madlibs
      In & Outs
      Interactive Stories
      Campfires
      Quizzes
      Wordsearches
