Letter from the editor

As I write this newsletter, many people around the world will be busy preparing for the Holidays. By the time you are reading the newsletter, I hope those taking part in the celebrations will have had a wonderful time, with many smiles and good things.

Right now, I am taking a moment to contemplate the kindness of others. My own celebrations weren’t going to happen this year. Indeed, I thought I might end up spending the holidays by myself. No tree, no presents, no nice food and, above all, no company. It was not a happy thought to be “celebrating” what is supposed to be a pleasant time in this manner.

I was lucky. It seems that even though life threw some obstacles on my path, it also reminded me that I am not alone. There are people who care, people who care enough to offer a helping hand. Writing.Com friends sent me smiles, both to my inbox and via snail mail. I hadn’t asked for this, but my friends knew times were a bit hard, and they decided, each in their own way, to surprise me and brighten my holidays.

Offline, each on their own initiative, friends decided to do the same. Help has come from every corner. I have a tree that almost touches the ceiling, decorated with lovely fairy lights and a sweet collection of baubles (I was even given an “I love my cat” one. People know me well.) There will be plenty of food on the table, and I have presents for everyone, waiting to be unwrapped tomorrow.

My little sister, who is visiting over New Year, has a pile of presents waiting for her and she, too, will be well-fed and catered for. This was another concern of mine. I wanted her to have a nice time, and it sure looks like she will.

The reason for sharing this story is not only to express gratitude to the kindness of the wonderful people in my life, but also to send out a message of hope to those who need it. Life can be hard at any time of the year, but there are always others out there who care. The world can seem like a harsh place, full of despair, but I think that, deep down, most people are good, and kind, and giving. Most of us want the world to be a better place for all.

And it’s good to remember that as a member of this writing website, you are not alone. Yes, it is a place to share your writings, and to better your skills. But it’s also a community of writers, and we’re there for the other. We share a common interest, a common passion if you will. We’re in this together, and this creates a natural bond.

So, wherever you are, and however you are spending this time of year, I wish you happy holidays and a wonderful 2008. I hope that it will be a good year for you, in which all your hopes will come true.

Happy writing, and happy sharing!
