Letter from the editor

With the holiday season behind us, and a new year full of opportunities awaiting us, this month can be a month filled with mixed feelings. Some may feel deflated after spending time with family and the festivities that come with the various celebrations. Suddenly, everything is back to normal, the house is quiet, the job is the same old, same old, and it’s almost like being dragged back into reality. For others, resolutions have been made and the New Year could well lead to a new and improved life.

I’m somewhere in-between with my feelings about the New Year. I’m always hopeful that the year to come will be the best one yet. You just never know. But I do miss the brief time of bonding and goodwill that seems to come naturally to people around the holidays.

The lead up to Christmas was a good one, and as I wrote in my last Newsletter, it was filled with many blessings. After that I had my little sister over from Holland, who I hadn’t seen in a year and a half. This, too, was a blessing. Unfortunately, the New Year then brought me a hospital spell due to pneumonia, perhaps to show me that life is not all jolly – it brings a mixture of good and bad. I am however happy that I am still alive and kicking due to medical science. That’s a blessing in itself.

If you are feeling deflated, and not quite happy with everything being back to normal, I’ve found it helpful to have a look at life and analyse what it is that can do with changing. Perhaps not everything can be fixed all at once, but quite often we can work towards bettering our lives, if we just think that little bit outside of the box. Risks may be involved, as will hard work and planning, but we only live once. Is it worth spending our lives stuck in a situation that could be better, if we just took a chance?

If you want to be a better writer, practice and take part in contests. Review other people’s items – you will find yourself learning along the way. If you want to be published, start submitting your pieces and don’t give up. So many bestselling authors received bags full of rejections, but they are on our shelves because they kept going for it.

If you are unhappy in your job, start looking for other opportunities. They might just be out there. If you can, take relevant courses. You might just find your family backing you all the way – they want to see you happy. Whatever area it is that can do with improving, don’t be scared to communicate your feelings with those around you. They might feel the same way, and you can work together towards a better life.

If you decide to go for it, 2008 could be a very interesting year indeed. Personally, I have decided I want to do some courses this year, and will be researching the options for my sister to come over to the UK and work and study here. We’re very excited about the possibilities. I’ll still be working on my anxiety issues, and on getting my work out in the big world of publications.

I hope that this year will be the best yet for all of us. Happy writing and planning!
