About This Newsletter

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”--Albert Einstein

“Because philosophy arises from awe, a philosopher is bound in his way to be a lover of myths and poetic fables. Poets and philosophers are alike in being big with wonder.”--St. Thomas Aquinas

“A friend who is far away is sometimes much nearer than one who is at hand. Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley than to those who inhabit the mountain?”--Kahlil Gibran

“The possibilities of creative effort connected with the subconscious mind are stupendous and imponderable. They inspire one with awe.”--Napoleon Hill

I am fyndorian and I am please to be bringing you this edition of the 'For Authors' Newsletter.

Letter from the editor

I received an email the other day from a fellow member here at WDC who had reviewed a bunch of my work. Her reviews were well written, bespeaking of an excellent writer. She was happy to have had the opportunity to review my work. I know she meant well and was being most complimentary when she wrote the following:

I would not otherwise have ventured to comment upon a moderator's writing. I naturally assume you august beings are above mundane things like feedback and reviews. So humbled to have seen the person in the austere blue robes. Be around in our lives, please. We need to touch the hems of lofty souls to dream of greatness ourselves. "

While her words made my day, they also gave me pause. If my work, or any writer's work inspires another writer, that is a good thing. What bothered me, however, was the thought that any writer should be above reviews or feedback. The thought that because I am a mod should put me above such things. I certainly do not feel that way, and I am not aware of any mod that feels that way. I hope none of them do. Frankly, I would hope no writer worth their salt does.

Mods are hard working souls who volunteer much time and effort to keeping WDC the amazing site it is. That doesn't mean we are necessarily better writers than other case colors. It means we have been and continue to be very involved on a multitude of levels. Some more, others less, but all committed to this site.

That being said. I would encourage any and everyone to read and review anyone's work here. We all, I expect, want to be better writers and one of the most effective tools we have is to read what others think and feel about our work, to take advantage of other reader's fresh eyes and insights and to see if we have effectively communicated that which we hoped to communicate. That's what it is all about after all!

Ask & Answer

nomlet writes:I enjoyed your new year's edition of this newsletter. I write in particular to say that your opening quotes did not go unappreciated. In fact, I'll make it my lifetime's resolution to someday become even a shadow of the quote-machine that Mark Twain was.

He was a remarkable writer...

reaburk01 writes:Awesome job, Fyn! I found the newsletter inspiring. I'm ready to kick this new year off with a bang! I felt especially awed by Twyls' goals. If only I had the vision to see that far ahead! lol...

You and me both!

elliexxx writes:Before I read this newsletter I was thinking about the 'Dear me' contest. I was thinking about my one resolution this year that, in fact, I have already achieved, and I looked into the future. What is the point in making a promise that I know I can achieve? Why bother, I might as well shove it to the bottom of the pile of things to do and leave it till later! Your newsletter, along with the various comments from others, showed me to push myself! Even if that means not achieving them all! Thank you.

*push...nudge* Triumph is just umph added to TRY!
