In his book The Hero, published in 1936, Lord Raglan identified twenty-two characteristics of an archetypical hero. These characteristics, referred to as life-patterns, are applicable to both male and female protagonist. The more of these events occurring in the protagonist life the closer he or she is to becoming a mythical hero, at least in literature.

1. Hero’s mother a virgin of royal blood
2. Hero’s father king
3. Many times the hero’s father is a close relative to hero’s mother
4. Hero’s conception occurred under unusual circumstances
5. Rumor has it that hero is the son/daughter of a god
6. Someone, normally a relative on father’s side of family, attempts to murder the hero at birth
7. Someone saves the hero by taking him/her out of danger
8. Hero raised in distant land by foster-parents
9. Foster-parents know nothing of hero’s background
10. When hero become adult he/she either returns to birthplace or travels to his/her future kingdom
11. Hero is victorious in battle with king, mythical creature or wild beast
12. Hero marries prince/princess, who is usually son/daughter of predecessor
13. Hero is crowned king/queen
14. For several years hero’s reigns is uneventfully
15. Hero does the normal things a country’s ruler does
16. At sometime hero loses favor with either the gods and or the people
17. Hero is dethroned and cast out of the region
18. Hero dies mysteriously
19. Hero usually dies on crest of a mountain or hill
20. Hero’s children do not become rulers
21. Hero’s body remains unburied
22. Hero has several sacred sepulchers

The protagonist in a story does not have to have all of these characteristics. In a short story or a piece of flash fiction, the protagonist may have fewer of these characteristics then in a novel. The more of these characteristics a protagonist has the longer the story and the more involved the plot of the novel.
