Halloween is just around the corner! It's time to start editing some of your older scary / horror items and get them ready for submission to contests or publication. There are a lot of Halloween contests on this site and you should be prepared. Think about all the great classic characters for your stories, like vampire, mummies, witches, goblins, zombies, ghosts and more!
What can be more fun than reading some spooky poems in the dark with a flashlight held to your chin? Or when camping in the woods?
I like to read vampire and ghost stories year 'round. I especially like the ones that come out near the holidays. Many e-publishers will accept shorts that feature holidays like a vampire Christmas. I encourage you, if you're thinking about writing for a contest, to look for a twist or a mix on genres. It will put your story in the forefront of the judge's mind since it's not a typical write.
Remember to check your grammar and spelling before submitting to contests. Putting your best foot forward is a good habit and makes it much easier for a judge to read. With so many entries, you want to be sure your story isn't eliminated at the end of the first paragraph. Also, be sure to read the contest rules. Word counts are often requested. It also helps to link back to the contest at the end of the story. It will help you remember later one what contest it was written for and helps advertise for the person holding the contest.
