Q&A

Question: Subject: Review Tools?

I've read about them, but I cannot locate them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Great question!

Answer:

Review Tool is a pre-prepared review template that "you" create and store in your Review Tool area. Prepare a template for separate group sigs, review forums, etc. and add them to your new template, save. You can make as many as you need. When you review you'll choose which template to use by the title you've given to it. Your sigs, greeting, and anything else you want to be always in the review, are already there, saving you time.

You reach it by clicking on review tool in the review box. The link is at the bottom beside the "Submit" and "Preview" buttons. Instead of writing directly into the review box, you click "Review Tool" and it will take you to your template.

The Review Tool is linked from the review area of each reviewable item. It provides a pop-up, full size review box wih additional tools. Your My Review Tool area allows you to manage your Review Templates and existing Draft Reviews.

What Do You Really Want?

Why do you write? Gray cases, why do you hesitate to post your work? We aren't all here to prepare a work to be published, some just enjoy writing. Does the emphasis on reviews scare you away from posting your work? My last editorial topic was on how to find the right reviews whether you wanted in-depth help or lighter, gentler reviews. This time I'll speak of no reviews at all. I know there are many of you who only want to read and be read - yes?

There is no need to be embarrassed by it, writers come in all sizes and they all fit in. In other words, there is no requirement to review or be reviewed 'in-depth'. There is not a requirement that you write at all! Serious readers are very important to writers, and their comments are needed as much as a review.

If you don't want reviews, edit your item to allow comments only. No rates and no reviews. You might be read less than you want, but you will still be read.

I've seen new members rush into the in-depth forums unprepared, not really understanding what 'in-depth'- meant, and coming out pretty upset, blaming the reviewers. They end up deleting the item or the review, or both, thus wasting the work of two people. They don't feel as good about the site as they did, and worry about posting more work. The reviewer worries if the next request for an in-depth/honest review is from a writer who knows what he's asking for or only has heard the words so often, he feels he should want it. Bad vibes all around. You both feel like a weed in a field of wild flowers, right?

It can be avoided by becoming knowledgeable about review forums, and posting in those suited to your needs. Be honest with reviewers; if your skin is 'new-writer' thin, stay away from the in-depth forums. They are there for the more experienced writers, those who hope to publish, or simply learn to write, a finely tuned piece. If that's you, they're a big help - if not, they're a big hurt. No one wants hurt.

Add an author's note to the top of your item asking for gentle tips only. If the note is there, most reviewers will honor it. The rate will be their own though, so turn it off if you're not ready.

Begin easy and enjoy your time learning. It's a long road to publication, and you have time - don't rush it. In the mean time, read, write and enjoy the site!

There is something to suit everyone's favorite pastime. If something is missing, CREATE it!

Question: Would you post your work into a forum for readers only? Readers, would you post your availability to read only? Can we get the two of you together in one forum?

Submitted Comment: lol, the more things change, the more they stay the same. It's always a pleasure to read these informative and inspiring newsletters. They are proof positive that some people really do care about the craft and art of "writing" and those who attempt to master it, as well as promote it here.

And Happy Birthday to "Rick". I feel as if I had known him from your very poignant and endearing words concerning him that are found in your port. They are beautiful memories that cannot help but touch anyone who chooses to read them.
Well done.

General! You and your charm have been missed around here. Yep, some people really do care, and thanks for the kind words.
