How lucky I am to have something
that makes saying goodbye so hard.

Letter from the editor

Goodbyes are not forever.
Goodbyes are not the end.
They simply mean I'll miss you
Until we meet again!
~Author Unknown

As some of you know, I work for a non-profit interfaith organization which assists homeless families with children. I am the van driver for this organization and I transport our guest families each morning from the day center to various churches in our city. In this role, I am fortunate to make friends with the families, as I see them regularly and spend at least one hour with them every morning of the week. The children especially are attracted to me and we become close friends, as we allow one another a safe environment. Recently, one of families graduated, meaning they met all the requirements of the program and found permanent housing. As we helped them move into their new home, there were many tears of joy. The eleven-year-old girl wept as she hugged me and told me ‘goodbye.’ In response, I told her that this was not goodbye; we would always be friends.

Now, comes the time when I say farewell to many dear friends here at Writing.com. I have been a member of this wonderful community since 2005 and have learned so much in my time here, as I have been the mentored and a mentor. I have established many relationships here and my departure from Writing.com is bittersweet – bitter because of the dear friends I have here and sweet because I know I am making the right decision, as I feel an inner peace.

I am type II diabetic and, in the last few months, my blood sugar readings have gotten out of control. My dear wife Melody stated that she and my grandchildren want me to be around for awhile. This caused me to think about my life and of changes I need to make for my health and my family. Because of the time I give the homeless families, I am no longer able to give Writing.com the quality time I once did. I look forward to the walks my wife and I will take together for our health and the time I will spend getting to know my grandchildren. I went to my grandson’s soccer game Saturday morning and realized how fortunate I am to have my grandchildren so close and how important it is that I spend time with them. So, for my physical and spiritual being I had to make the hard decision to depart Writing.com.

StoryMaster created and maintains a wonderful site which I recommend to many others. I am very blessed to have been a part of Writing.com. After conferring with b_boonstra, I have transferred her book “Poetry Forms” to the port of shaara and I transferred my “Researching Poetry” to Brenpoet ; each book will still be available for the poets of Writing.com. Writing.com provides great opportunities for writers to improve and to help others improve writing skills. I have improved vastly in my time here and have watched others improve.

Thanks to those who have journeyed with me, to those who have been my mentors, to those who allowed me to learn from you as I mentored you, and to those who were my peers. Though I must say farewell, I will not say goodbye, because having friends like you does making saying goodbye hard. I’ll miss you, until me meet again.

If anyone wants to stay in contact, I have an account on Facebook – Larry Ray Powers; please feel free to contact me. In a week or two, I will close my account. I will still write poetry and have plans to design my own poetry website in the near future.
