About This Newsletter

Boo! StaiNed-House Targaryen is lurking! *Smirk* Welcome to my first ever horror/scary newsletter, I am a guest editor this week.

When you turn the lights out at night, climb into bed and pull the covers up over your head, do you worry about what may be in the cupboard, under the bed or creeping out from under the stairs? Does your blood run cold, and goose pimples emerge across your arms and neck? Do you peep from under the covers and imagine you see a shadow in the corner or hear a creak upon the top stair? Then you must be thinking of the Boogeyman.

From Stephen King's The Night Shift, "The thing under my bed waiting to grab my ankle isn't real. I know that, and I also know that if I'm careful to keep my foot under the covers, it will never be able to grab my ankle."

Letter from the editor

The boogeyman is an an amorphous embodiment of terror. The name brings fear into small children, adults too. We learn that it hides under our beds, in our closets, the space under the stairs, attic, even the basement. It is the reason as children, we need a nightlight, and fear hanging our feet or hands over the bed's edge in the quiet gloom of the night, as we sleep. It is the unknown, the shadow that smiles back. *Smirk* It is what goes bump back in the dark.

The bogeyman (also spelled boogyman, bogyman, boogieman, boogey monster, or boogeyman) is a legendary ghost-like monster. *Smirk* It has no specific appearance, and conceptions of the monster can vary drastically even from household to household within the same community. Parents often say that if their child is naughty, the bogeyman will get them, in an effort to make them behave and once, (shame on me) as a teenager, I had my baby sister, beside herself believing the boogeyman was outside her bedroom window, with my weird sense of humor. *Laugh*

The Boogeyman is also known as the creature with many names. Here are a few.

Bogey:

In British folklore, a class of horrible evil spirits or hobgoblins, traveling alone or in groups, that love to make mischief. Bogies go by various other names, the most common of which are Bogey-man, Boogie-Man, Bug-a-boo, Boo, Bugbear, Bock, Boggart, and Bogey-beast. Bogies are recognized in other cultures by still other names. They sometimes are synonymous with the Devil.

In Wales, the Bogey is called a Bug ( ghost ), in Scotland a Bogle, and in Germany a Boggelmann.

The Irish Puca is similar. No matter where it is found, the bogey is usually big and black, typically does it's work at night, and scares children. In past generations, the threat of calling upon bogies was used to frighten children into good behavior.

Boggart:

A type of Bogey hobgoblin in English Folklore that has poltergeist habits. Although it can be helpful and sociable with some people, the boggart most often is mischievous, annoying and frightening. Without making a visual appearance, it makes itself known by playing tricks on people, such as pulling off their bedclothes. Sometimes boggart acts are accompanied by terrible noises or laughter. Boggarts can also be nasty and mean, and have been known to scratch, punch and pinch people, and even snatch and carry them away. They inhabit a house, churchyard or field, or live in another body, such as that of a cat or dog. In some cases, exorcism successfully puts an end to their activities.

Bogeyman tales vary by region. In some places the bogeyman is male, in others, female. In some Midwestern states of the USA the Bogeyman does not enter bedrooms but instead scratches on the windows. It is said that a wart can be transmitted to someone by the Bogeyman. Bogeymen may be said to target a specific mischief – for instance, a Bogeyman that persecutes children who suck their thumbs – or just general misbehavior.
