It wasn't until a few years ago that I started really getting into mystery novels. My mother-in-law introduced me to a different authors and styles. (I even tried writing my own mystery novel two years ago for NaNoWriMo. I found out that writing Mystery is a lot more difficult than I thought!)

I'd have to say that the Pendergast series (penned by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child) have been my favorites of the genre. They tend to combine mystery with art and archaeology (two of my favorite subjects) and they involve the unique and likable Agent Aloysius Pendergast as detective.

I thought I'd take a look at the detective to try and figure out why he's so likable:

*Bullet* For one, he's highly intelligent. He's one of those guys that can find his way out of any situation (and he does get out of some really tricky ones)

*Bullet* He's wealthy. Now, this normally wouldn't automatically make a character likable for me, but he's got unlimited resources and a huge library.

*Bullet* He's a rebel. Non-traditionally, he is an FBI agent who works with no partner on cases involving serial killers.

*Bullet* He has a great deal of charm and wit, and tends to stick it to the characters that deserve it most.


The agent's first appearance is in The Relic (and please, don't base your interest in reading the book upon your viewing of the film) and continues through six more novels (Reliquary, The Cabinet of Curiosities, Still Life with Crows, Brimstone, Dance of Death, The Book of the Dead, The Wheel of Darkness, and Cemetery Dance). He starts as a supporting character in two of the "Pendergast" books, but by the third, he become the protagonist.

If you're looking for some good mysteries with a pretty unique and likable detective, please check them out.
