The Snowstorm of Procrastination

It starts out with a Flake or Two...you decide you're going to enter a contest that looks interesting. You bookmark the page and jot a note or two about the story / poem you'd like to write. Then a Flurry of Flakes swirl about as you look over the contest page and find a few more places you could enter your work. But you decide a game of Scrabble looks fun and will get back to the contests later.

A Small Drift forms, you've only completed one poem and an outline for a short story. A nap sounds like more fun than looking over the rules of all the contests you bookmarked. *Sleep* You wake from your nap to find you can hardly push open the front door because a Huge Snowbank is blocking it. You become determined and push the door open so you can surf the contest page again. You enter your poem, and then realize your poem actually needs some editing...and what's your word count?

BAM! BAM! You're pelted with Snowballs! The cold hard smack of reality sets in as you realize entries for four contests are due tomorrow at 11:59 pm WDC time. You convince yourself you have plenty of time. You skip editing the poem and hope for the best on that one. A quick sketch on your short story and you start to write, huddled in your Igloo of Denial. Then you realize this story is due today and you probably won't make the deadline.

Quick! Grab that acrostic you wanted to write! You might finish that. Or...not.

Don't get frozen out of contests because you allow the Snowstorm of Procrastination to begin. If you like to enter contests, don't frustrate yourself by waiting until the last minute to work on your entries. *Key* Decide how much time you can actually devote to writing, choose a few quality contests to enter and give yourself a better chance to win. If you have extra time after those entries are ready, you can always enter a few daily contests like "The Writer's Cramp to keep your muse amused until another contest comes along.

Now wrap up in one of those Snuggie blankets and get busy writing!
